Symptoms may include: Delusions. These are false beliefs that are not based in reality. For example, you think that you're being harmed or harassed; certain gestures or comments are directed at you; you have exceptional ability or fame; another person is in love with you; or a major catastrophe is about to occur.
Symptoms of schizophrenia can include: hallucinations – hearing or seeing things that do not exist outside of the mind. delusions – unusual beliefs not based on reality. muddled thoughts and speech based on hallucinations or delusions.
The active phase (sometimes called “acute”), can be the most alarming to friends and family. It causes symptoms of psychosis like delusions, hallucinations, and jumbled speech and thoughts.
Schizophrenia is a severe, chronic brain disorder that causes people to interpret reality abnormally—they don't know what sights, sounds, and experiences are real or what they are imagining.

People who are undergoing a very severe schizophrenia episode may require in-patient care at a hospital or psychiatric clinic. If a person's care team think they would be best cared for in a hospital or clinic, they will explain that to the person and encourage them to admit themselves for care.
Factors for poor prognosis
Patients that use recreational drugs or smoke cigarettes have a poorer prognosis due to the effect of these substances on brain pathways and mental function.
If left untreated, schizophrenia can worsen at any age, especially if you continue to experience episodes and symptoms. Typically, early onset schizophrenia in the late teens tends to be associated more with severe symptoms than later-life onset. But aging can change the trajectory of how symptoms show up.

These chemicals are thought to include dopamine, which helps to carry messages between brain cells. Some research suggests that an imbalance between certain neurotransmitters, including dopamine and serotonin, may be one of the causes behind schizophrenia.
