Josiah's heart was soft because he chose to do RIGHT at an early age. Although he was young when he became king, Josiah made a decision to walk in the ways of the Lord. Choosing to walk in the ways of the Lord at a young age helped him maintain a soft heart as he grew older.
It is patience in the face of difficulties, trials, and opposition. It is not the surrender of one's rights and it is not cowardice. It does not mean weakness. It is self-control over one's temperament and emotions. Jesus was the very model of gentleness.

Kindness is one of the ways you can tell from a person's life if they are a follower of Christ. As we read in Galatians, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law” (5:22-23, NIV).
Gentleness is strength. It has the power to soothe pain, calm anger and bring peace. It was the gentleness of Jesus that drew people to him. His ability to forgive and not judge.
Gentleness does not mean weakness. It can also be defined as courage. The courage to stand for what is right and the strength to fight for the right. Our Lord is often referred to in Scripture as "the Good Shepherd." He is described as a gentle faithful shepherd.
A clean heart is essential to a right relationship with God. So how can our heart be pure, if we are sinful (Mark 7:21-23)? The answer is that God cleanses our hearts when we repent and turn to Him. He washes away our sin and gives us a new heart - one that is full of His love and desire to please Him.
