The hours between 3am and 5am are governed by the lung meridian. Emotionally it is associated with grief and physically with the muscles around your lungs.
If you consistently wake at 4 AM - it could be due to an imbalance in your Lungs, which is related to grief and sadness, fatigue, or reduced immune function.

Core body temperature starts to rise, sleep drive is reducing (because we've had a chunk of sleep), secretion of melatonin (the sleep hormone) has peaked, and levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) are increasing as the body prepares to launch us into the day.

The best way to put an end to late-night awakenings is to keep a consistent sleep-wake schedule. That means getting up at the same time each day (yes, even on weekends). Committing yourself to a proper bedtime is only half the battle to improve your sleep hygiene. Having other good sleep habits is just as important.
So if your liver is slow and stagnant from an accumulation of fat during the liver cleansing time (1-4am), the body will try to allocate more energy for detoxification and trigger your nervous system to wake you up.
3 am Hour of Brahma
If you have ever awakened at 3 a.m., you will find the earth consciousness silent and asleep, deep within the peace of rest. By meditating at 3 a.m., we are able to enter into that peacefulness, that calmness.

One likely explanation for waking up at the same time each night is that you go to sleep at the same time and then, at the same time each night, you reach a light stage of sleep and wake up. We're also more likely to remember waking up if it's closer to the time we normally get up for the day.
The emotion of anger is associated with the choleric humor and can cause resentment and irritability. It is believed that this emotion is stored in the liver and gall bladder, which contain bile.
The Witching Hour – the hour between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. – is the time of night when the barrier between the physical and spiritual realm is the thinnest. This allows Guides, Spirits and Angels to seamlessly travel between the two worlds and come whisper in your ear.
For instance, the liver is at its peak detox stage between 1 and 3 am. You should sleep by midnight so that your liver could focus on its cleansing function. Additionally, your lungs are most actively cleansing themselves between 3 and 5 am.
According to sleep specialists, most people actually wake up about 6 times per night, and one of those is usually around 2 or 3 am, depending on when they hit the hay. They also say that waking up at that time is just a sign that we have shifted from deep sleep to a lighter sleep where our brains are more active.
The best time to take melatonin is when you can sleep for at least six hours. With less than six hours of sleep, the additional melatonin may leave you groggier than usual and tired the next day. Therefore, you do not want to take melatonin in the morning or when you won't be able to sleep long enough.
Emotions and the Metal Element
The Lungs are associated with sadness, sorrow and grief, and when these emotions are present in excess, they tend to weaken the Lungs (some of you may be familiar with the cough that can come up out of the blue for those that are grieving a significant loss).
Your kidneys filter your blood as well, removing byproducts of digestion and other bodily processes by producing the urine that flushes them from your body.
Waking up between 3am and 5am is associated with the energy meridian that runs through the lungs and is connected to the emotion of sadness. Sometimes in the middle age range of our lives, we can feel a quiet and seemingly unexplained sadness.
At 1am is when our liver energy starts to flow, and the liver is the main detoxifying organ in the body.
