The results show the trained greyhounds galloped faster than the captive cheetahs, with a top speed of 68 kilometres per hour compared with the cheetah's 64 kilometres per hour.
Fun fact: A Greyhound dog can beat a Cheetah in a long distance race.
Cheetahs weigh 46–160 pounds, they are 2.2–3.1 feet tall at the shoulder, and 3.6–4.9 feet long. Most dog breeds the same weight that are built for strength would win.
A well-trained dog can intimidate a cheetah and chase it away without injuring it. A guard dog protects the farmer's livestock and helps keep cheetahs safe from retaliation. In addition to scaring away predators, guard dogs can serve as early warning systems.
At 70 miles per hour (113 kilometers per hour), cheetahs are the world's fastest cat and the world's fastest land mammal, so the world's fastest dog, a greyhound clocked at speeds up to 45 mph (72 km/h), probably won't be catching a cheetah in a sprint.
The strongest land animal in the world is the elephant. The typical Asian elephant has 100,000 muscles and tendons arranged along the length of the trunk, enabling it to lift almost 800 pounds. The gorilla, the strongest as well as largest primate on the planet, is at least six times stronger than the average human.
The cheetah is the fastest land animal. This big cat holds the record for the quickest creature on solid earth. It is lithe and muscular with intractable claws which help provide traction.
Greyhound. Originally bred to be hunting dogs, Greyhounds are widely accepted to be the fastest dog breed. For decades, Greyhounds have been used in dog racing. A highly energetic breed, it comes as no surprise that their legs can carry them as fast as 45 miles per hour.
The slowest of all of the dog breeds are:
Basset Hounds, who can run between 5-10 miles per hour. Pugs, who can run between 5-10 miles per hour. Shih Tzus, which can run around 6 miles per hour.
However, dogs generally have an advantage over cats, as many are bred specifically for their hunting or athletic abilities. To get the most accurate answer, we've measured the fastest cat breed against the fastest dog breed, and dogs are indeed faster than cats. However, cats can still outrun dogs!
Cheetahs are pretty lightly-built cats: A full grown adult Cheetah is 44–143 lbs. They aren't exactly built for strength… they're built for speed. Any decently muscled dog in the same size category could probably beat it in a wrestling match.
The common wisdom is that , at size parity, cats tend to dominate dogs, so a dog would need at least a decently large size advantage to win against a cat. And indeed, clouded leopards hubt prey much larger than a pitbull, so I would give it to the clouded leopard, at least at similar sizes.
The Nile crocodile, found in sub-Saharan Africa, is the most aggressive animal in the world.
Mantis shrimp pack the strongest punch of any creature in the animal kingdom. Their club-like appendages accelerate faster than a bullet out of a gun and just one strike can knock the arm off a crab or break through a snail shell. These small but mighty crustaceans have been known to take on octopus and win.
The results show that the elephant wears the crown in the animal kingdom – but only slightly. Elephants had a win rate of 74%, just fractions of a percent ahead of their single-horned cousins – the rhinoceros – in second place, also on 74%. Not far behind in third place is the grizzly bear, at 73%.
If we stop there, it would seem dogs have the edge in the race for speed. But in the wild, there is no animal that runs faster than the Cheetah, one of Earth's big cats living in Africa and parts of Asia. As the fastest land animal alive, the Cheetah has been clocked with speeds up to 75 mph!
Cheetah. The cheetah is skilled at running down fast prey and can reach a top speed of 113kph (70mph). That's three times faster than the top running speed for a human which is about 36kph (22mph)! Cheetahs have a skill that no other big cat has, find out what that is in our Animal A-Z section.
