The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a medium-large dog originally bred in southern Africa to hunt large game, including lions. It was previously known as the African Lion Hound.
Chow Chow. We'll start with the most famous lion-dog of all: the Chow Chow. An ancient breed from China, it's easy to see why this fluffy fellow tops the list of dogs that look like lions. Chows thick fur and small, rounded ears give them a distinctly leonine appearance.

The Kangal is a large, muscular dog that typically weighs between 100 and 130 pounds. They have been trained to guard sheep and other flocks against giant predators such as wolves, jackals, and bears. The Kangal has a mighty bite, with a bite force of 743 PSI. It is the highest bite force of any dog breed.
The most effective breeds include Akbash, Kangal, Great Pyrenees, and Komondor.
Komainu, sometimes referred to as lion dogs, are the guardian statues that can be found guarding the entrances to shrines and temples in Japan.
Kangal vs Lion: Size
The Kangal is a giant dog, but it doesn't come close to the size of the average lion. Even female lions are almost double the size of the largest Kangal dog- but how large are we talking exactly? Lions range in height from 40-48 inches at least, while the Kangal reaches 30-32 inches tall only.
Shih Tzus are also often known as the Chinese Lion Dog or the Chrysanthemum Dog.
The Tibetan mastiff is known for its long, golden coats and flowing lion-like mane. Standing at at least 26 inches shoulder height and typically weighing well over 100 lbs., the Tibetan mastiff is known to sell for at least $7,000 per puppy at the low end.
But creating hybrids of animals that are very genetically distinct from each other—such as a dog and a cat—is scientifically impossible, as is one species giving birth to an entirely different one.
The liger is a hybrid offspring of a male lion (Panthera leo) and a tigress, or female tiger (Panthera tigris). The liger has parents in the same genus but of different species. The liger is distinct from the similar hybrid called the tigon, and is the largest of all known extant felines.

About the Breed

Having the features of a lion and the size of a giant, the Tibetan Mastiff is determined, intelligent, and obedient – at times. Other times, they will do as they please.
Ubiquitous as they are now at shrines, Komainu have been used outdoors only since the 14th century. In Asia, the lion was popularly believed to have the power to repel evil, and for this reason it was habitually used to guard gates and doors.
