Milk. Next to water, milk is the healthiest drink for your teeth. It protects tooth enamel, contains vitamins and calcium and can actually reduce tooth decay. You could even let some chocolate milk slide now and then (just be cautious of the amount of sugar).
Green or White Tea
Green and white teas are the best types of tea for your teeth. Green, white, and black tea all have a lot of antioxidants, which help fight cavity-causing bacteria and reduce inflammation in your gums, but black tea will stain your teeth yellow over time.
Typically, dark green vegetable juices are better for your teeth. Juice that has kale, or spinach contain healthy B vitamins that can help fight against gum disease. Leafy greens are also high in calcium, which boosts your enamel health.
Sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks, iced and sweet teas, and fruit juices all have high acid levels. Most of these drinks also contain sugar, which has the potential to be doubly damaging to teeth.
Calcium is one of the most important minerals for healthy teeth because it helps strengthen your enamel. Sure, you may know that dairy products are a great source of calcium, but so are leafy greens, beans, and almonds.
Carbonated water, even flavored brands, can still lead to erosion in your tooth enamel, but it is a better option than drinking soda or other detrimental options. Carbonation alone does not appear to damage the teeth. However, other added ingredients can contribute to the demineralization of teeth.
Water, no matter the source, is an excellent way to fight cavities and protect your teeth. This is because water washes away some of the harmful elements that you consume that live on in your teeth. It dilutes acid, washes away sugar, and flushes out food debris lingering in your mouth.
High in phosphate and calcium, cheese (and milk) helps neutralize the acid in the mouth, killing bacteria and preserving tooth enamel. This prevents cavities and gum disease. Chewing celery (or apples or carrots) produces saliva, neutralizing the bacteria Streptococcus mutans that causes cavities.
Sadly, once the enamel or bone have been worn away, you can't get them back – unless you replace the whole tooth. That being said, there are ways you can replenish those minerals with a few lifestyle changes and home remedies before tooth decay sets in. This process is called remineralization.
Bruxism (Teeth Grinding): The repeated friction and stress from grinding or clenching your teeth can wear down your tooth enamel, leading to weak, brittle teeth. Food choices: Diets rich in sugary and acidic foods and lacking in certain vitamins and minerals often translate to weak and brittle teeth.
Periodontal disease can cause teeth to loosen in their sockets. Grinding your teeth (bruxism) can cause teeth to shift. And traumatic injuries from contact sports or accidental falls can loosen or even knock teeth out. The good news is that loose teeth can almost always be saved if they're treated in time.
Non-White or Yellow Teeth are Unhealthy
Teeth whitening treatments usually work by stripping or entering the outer enamel layer, which makes teeth weaker if done many times. So, more often than not, yellow teeth are actually stronger than pearly white ones–so long as they're cleaned regularly.
There are multiple ways to fix weak teeth, however, veneers, crowns and bonding are known to produce the best results. Another option that can be done in conjunction with the other options is a fluoride treatment. Fluoride helps to remineralize the tooth, which can help to bring back strength.
While it appears the worst offenders are citrus, and fruit-flavored dark colas, the light-colored soft drinks, teas, and ginger ale are all particularly harmful for tooth enamel. Teeth that come into contact regularly with soft drinks can lose up to 5% of their density and enamel weight over time.
