If one breast is allowed to 'dry up', it will be smaller than the breast that continues to make milk. This will cause uneven breasts; once weaning occurs, though, most women's breasts will even up again.
When there is less milk production in one breast, pump on the less productive side after feedings and in between your regular feedings. Remember, when it comes to breastfeeding, demand=supply. This is an excellent way to increase breast milk supply in one breast!
In most women, however, the body makes more or less milk based on demand. In the early phases of breastfeeding, some babies prefer one breast over the other and, based on that, some mothers feed more on one side. Therefore, the breast that is not "used" as much does not produce as much milk.

How do I know whether my breasts are empty? There's no test or way to know for sure. In general, though, if you gently shake your breasts and they feel mostly soft and you don't feel the heaviness of milk sitting in them, you're probably fine.
Also, feed for as long as baby wants. Engorgement increases the risk of plugged duct forming and can decrease your milk supply.
Your breasts will likely become engorged.
Three to four days after delivery, your breasts may grow to a size you previously couldn't have imagined. They may also become almost rock-hard. This is engorgement.
Generally, moms should be pumping every 3 hours. Pumping more often can help stimulate breasts to produce more milk. Moms can try pumping both breasts for 15 minutes every two hours for 48-72 hours. Then moms can return to their normal pumping routine. Pumping for longer than 30 minutes may not be beneficial.
Some babies will be satisfied after nursing from only one breast. Others might prefer one breast over the other. If your baby has only fed from one breast and you are comfortable at the end of a feeding, you don't need to pump. But if either breast is still full and uncomfortable, pump or hand express to comfort.
You're not getting let down. If your breasts feel like they're full but you're not able to get the milk flowing out when you pump, it could be that you're not achieving let down. The let down reflex releases your milk from the milk ducts. This only occurs when you're either breastfeeding or pumping.

One of the best ways to increase breast milk production is to make sure you aren't suffering from dehydration. Remember, dehydration can dramatically decrease breast milk production. By staying hydrated and avoiding dehydration, your body will have the water and electrolytes it needs to build milk supply.
Trying not to go more than 4 hours without pumping/nursing is a general breastfeeding rule while breastmilk is being established. It's best to wait until after the first 12 weeks to start eliminating pumping sessions.
Despite views to the contrary, breasts are never truly empty. Milk is actually produced nonstop—before, during, and after feedings—so there's no need to wait between feedings for your breasts to refill.
As newborns get older, they'll nurse less often, and may have a more predictable schedule. Some might feed every 90 minutes, whereas others might go 2–3 hours between feedings. Newborns should not go more than about 4 hours without feeding, even overnight.
Your breasts feel softer
This happens as your milk supply adjusts to your baby's needs. The initial breast fullness reduces in the first few weeks. At around 6 weeks, breast fullness is completely gone and your breasts may feel soft. This is completely normal and has no effect on your milk supply.
When you are trying to dry up your breast milk supply, it is normal to experience discomfort. However, if you are experiencing pain or other concerning symptoms, it is time to call your doctor or lactation specialist.
' Once breastfeeding stops, the milk-making cells in your breasts will gradually shrink, making them smaller in size. Some women say their breasts look or feel empty at this stage. As time passes, fat cells will be laid down again in place of milk-making cells, and you might find your breasts regain some fullness.
Potential complications of drying up your milk supply: Clogged ducts and Mastitis. Occasionally engorgement may lead to a clogged duct or mastitis.
At the other end of the spectrum, increasing the milk supply too much through pumping can lead to engorgement, blocked milk ducts, and increased risk of breast inflammation, or infection (mastitis).
Your husband may have to take one for the team and try to suck out the clog. Especially if your baby is younger your husband may be able to suck a lot harder. You can also use the dangle feeding position above to allow gravity to help him suck it out. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do!
Stress is the No. 1 killer of breastmilk supply, especially in the first few weeks after delivery. Between lack of sleep and adjusting to the baby's schedule, rising levels of certain hormones such as cortisol can dramatically reduce your milk supply.
