To test God means much more than trying to get Him to do a miracle; to test God is to insist that He prove that He is trustworthy. To test God is to look at today's difficulties and say, “A loving God would never let me suffer in this way.
It's not a sin to question God — search the scriptures if you doubt. I believe God wants us to question His plan and His ways. He settles our doubts by giving us the belief that His ways are not always our ways.
To test God's will is to look at life differently and ask what He wants. Testing is accomplished through a series of trials, seeking after what is a good and acceptable use of our life for His purposes. Similar to testing a metal by putting it through the fire we are to explore and investigate God's will.
Being tested is a natural part of being human. So it is no surprise that being tested is also a biblical design pattern. Characters in the Bible experience tests throughout the entire story to see if they can live up to God's intended purpose for humanity.
Jesus quotes Moses from Deuteronomy 6:16: “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested Him at Massah.” What does Moses mean by “putting the Lord to the test?” In order to understand this verse, we must go back and look at what happened at Massah. Israel had seen God do great things in the past.

God Allows Trouble to Prove the Genuineness of Our Faith
Likewise, God puts faith to the test to prove it is genuine. As someone said, “The acid of grief tests the coin of belief.” When some hardship hits in your life, your faith will be put to the test.
Likewise, God ordains tests for us, not for his sake, but for ours. He ordains tests today just as he did in the Old Testament with the testing of his people, and in the New Testament with the testing of the disciples.
All sins shall be forgiven, except the sin against the Holy Ghost; for Jesus will save all except the sons of perdition. What must a man do to commit the unpardonable sin? He must receive the Holy Ghost, have the heavens opened unto him, and know God, and then sin against him.
