Rhaenyra's three eldest sons all died fighting during the Dance of the Dragons, but her two youngest sons, the sons by her second husband, Prince Daemon, survived the civil war.
At the end of season 1, Lucerys meets his death in an attack at the hand of his uncle, Aemond Targaryen.
But the death of Rhaenyra's son Lucerys at the hands of Aegon's brother Aemond—mistake or not—enraged Rhaenyra and kicked off a civil war that will play out over several seasons. Rhaenyra and her husband Daemon are now scrabbling for allies.
Lucerys Velaryon died after riding away from Storm's End when he was eaten mid-flight by Aemond Targaryen's dragon, Vhagar.
9 Lucerys Was Killed By His Own Uncle.
As any good finale is, the season finale for House of the Dragon is a heavy one. Representing a tipping point in the series, Prince Lucerys Velaryon, son of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon, is killed in a tragic accident on dragonback.
Prince Lucerys Velaryon, [N 4] nicknamed Luke, was a prince of the Targaryen dynasty and the heir to Driftmark following the presumed death of his legal father, Ser Laenor Velaryon.
Luke's stepfather, Prince Daemon Targaryen, avenged his death by sending "Blood and Cheese" to assassinate one of Aegon II's sons.
In a poetic end to the deadly war, Rhaenyra's son with Daemon became King Aegon III. He was also wed to his cousin, Aegon II's daughter Jaehaera.
In Fire & Blood, Rhaenyra becomes vengeful, war-hungry, and dangerous after Lucerys' death. These reactions are all understandable, given her horrific grief.
As the two dragons struggled in the Battle Above the Gods Eye, Daemon plunged from Caraxes, wielding his sword Dark Sister and stabbing it into Aemond's remaining eye. Both dragons crashed into the Gods Eye, and Vhagar drowned with Aemond's body still chained to the saddle while Caraxes died on the shore.
Originally, Aemond Targaryen didn't regret killing his nephew on House of the Dragon. This is different from how this event is described in George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood. There, we assume that Aemond pursued Lucerys intending to kill him, and then did.
In House of the Dragon's season 1 finale, Rhaenyra learns about the tragic death of her beloved son Lucerys Velaryon, after having sent the young boy to deliver a message to Lord Borros Baratheon.
Aemond killed Rhaenyra's son after a dragon chase through the rain, before which Aemond laughed and tried to cut out Luke's eye. The pursuit culminated in Aemond losing control of his dragon, which brutally chomped Luke and his dragon.
Rhaenyra and Daemon both know Laenor is alive, and faked his death.
The most important aspect is that Aemond seems to have killed Lucerys and his dragon on purpose, with Vhagar acting according to his commands. Luke and Arrax were indeed swifter than Aemond and Vhagar in the skies, but the storm was an impediment for them.
Later, in episode seven, Daemon tells Rhaenyra that he and Laena were "happy enough" in their marriage. In that regard, there was far more love between Daemon and Laena than there ever was between him and Rhea, even if it wasn't entirely romantic.
Daemon strangled Rhaenyra because he felt betrayed by Viserys. “It's a moment that I think is surprising and shocking for Daemon as a character, but I also think it's one of those things that's been set up over the course of the entire season.
In defiance of his allegiances and position as the Queen's Hand, Corlys warned Addam of his impending imprisonment, placing blood over political alliances. Addam fled the scene upon his dragon, Seasmoke, and Corlys was beaten and imprisoned for his treachery of Queen Rhaenyra's orders.
Aegon II's quick but viscerally brutal slaying of Queen Rhaenyra doesn't seem to do her justice.
Lord Corlys Velaryon, Corwyn's son. Known as the "'Sea Snake", Master of Driftmark and Lord of the Tides.
Whatever way you want to frame the death of Lucerys Velaryon, the end result is the same: Aemond is responsible for the death of his nephew, and Rhaenyra's blacks will want to seek vengeance. Aemond will still most likely get a reputation as a kinslayer, and will have to decide whether to “own it” or not.
Luke laughing at Aemond wasn't maliciously intended, as Jace had just made a peaceful toast to Aegon about fondly remembering their shared youth – which included the “pink dread” incident. Since they're no longer children, Luke thought Aemond might laugh about this matter, but this was simply not in his uncle's nature.
After a brief chase through the permanent storm that covers the Stormlands, Arrax disobeys Lucerys and attacks Aemond's dragon, Vhagar, head-on, spitting fire on the older dragon's head in an attempt to protect his rider.
