Where does an undertaker or funeral home take the body? If there is no for the coroner to be involved the body is taken to a mortuary. A Mortuary is a place where a deceased person can safely be stored. This area is similar to a large cool room.
Once a funeral home has picked up the body and brought it to their facility, they will then clean and dress and/or shroud the body. Afterward, the body will be placed in refrigeration to keep it cool until the day of burial, at which point the body will be transported to the burial site.

Phase 3: Rigor Mortis

What's really returned to you is the person's skeleton. Once you burn off all the water, soft tissue, organs, skin, hair, cremation container/casket, etc., what you're left with is bone. A Closed Casket Funeral Preserves Final Memories
Many people choose to have a closed casket in order to preserve their final memory of the deceased. Closed caskets are also better for anyone who passed away from an accident that caused changes to their appearance.
A closed casket provides more privacy. There may even be religious reasons for a closed casket service. A closed casket service may have been the preference of the deceased, so people would tend to remember them “as they were”. Afamily may just feel uneasy or uncomfortable having an open casket service.
If you are looking at a long-lasting ground casket, pick a steel or metal casket. If the grave site is low on water content or moisture, metal caskets are known to last even longer, over five decades. Under favorable weather conditions, experts say that metal caskets may even last more than that – up to 80 years.
Stage 3: Putrefaction - 4 to 10 days after death
People might find these gases foul smelling, but they are very attractive to a variety of insects. The build up of gas resulting from the intense activity of the multiplying bacteria, creates pressure within the body.
