The video game series is set in the fictional town of Silent Hill in the USA, inspired by the very real town of Centralia, Pennsylvania. In this real world town, there is nothing left but a few dilapidated buildings and a road that slowly sinks into the ground.
In May 1962, the city ordered to have the local landfill burned in an attempt to clean up the waste. The fire spread through unsealed tunnels and openings that led to an abandoned coal mine. The town of Silent Hill is not actually filled with monsters. It is a waking nightmare, or dreamlike hallucination that only James can see.
Please make sure that you don't disturb residents' property and that you obey any “No Trespassing” signs that you might see while visiting Centralia, Pennsylvania. It's also a good idea to stay upwind of any smoke or steam that you see rising from the ground as it's likely toxic.
At its current rate, it could continue to burn for over 250 years. It has caused most of the town to be abandoned: by 2017, the population had dwindled to 5 residents from around 1,500 at the time the fire is believed to have started, and most of the buildings have been razed.

One scene in particular that was highlighted as a problem involved Alex (the main character) having a drill forced into his right eye socket, which caused a lot of blood to spray out. Konami is being urged to tone down the violence so that the game can see a release down there.
