What Is Gynecomastia? Sometimes, guys develop breasts during puberty. This is called gynecomastia (pronounced: guy-nuh-ko-MAS-tee-uh). It's usually due to normal hormone changes during puberty, and almost always goes away on its own within a few months to a couple of years.
Gynecomastia can be seen as a button-sized growth underneath the nipple. You may be able to see this as a breast lump or feel it when you press on the area. The lump may move easily within the breast tissue and may be tender to touch. Breast lumps and breast enlargement may occur in one or both breasts.
Treatment. Most cases of gynecomastia resolve over time without treatment. However, if gynecomastia is caused by an underlying condition — such as hypogonadism, malnutrition or cirrhosis — that underlying condition may need treatment.
Surgery to correct gynecomastia
Surgery to remove the breast tissues usually involves liposuction of the excess fat, surgical removal of the excess glandular breast tissue through an incision in the margin of the nipple-areolar complex and/or skin excision (in very large male breasts).
Generally, gynecomastia isn't a serious problem, but it can be tough to cope with the condition. Men and boys with gynecomastia sometimes have pain in their breasts and may feel embarrassed. Gynecomastia may go away on its own. If it persists, medication or surgery may help.
Patients with alcohol-related liver disease are at particular risk of gynecomastia because phytoestrogens in alcohol and the direct inhibition of testosterone production by ethanol further disrupt the estrogen-to-testosterone ratio.
Most adult men who suffer from gynecomastia feel helpless about their condition. The good news is that gynecomastia can go away. The majority of adolescent boys who experience enlarged breasts will see it subside as they reach adulthood. Men with fatty gynecomastia may see an improvement with weight loss and exercise.

Gynaecomastia can affect one or both breasts. The area can be tender to touch or painful. True gynaecomastia (caused by an enlargement of breast tissue) is different from an increase in fatty tissue (known as pseudo-gynaecomastia). However, gynaecomastia can also be a mixture of both.
It is often caused by changes in levels of the female hormone (estrogen) and the male hormone (testosterone). Other things may cause it as well. Most cases happen when a preteen or teenage boy is going through puberty. But it can also happen to newborn babies and older men.
Gynecomastia can be the result of enlarged glandular tissue, an increase in fat or a combination of the two. Since glandular tissue does not disappear with weight loss, that leaves only the category of enlarged breasts caused solely by fat as the only possibility to be able to disappear with weight loss.
