The Rainbow Crab is also known as the African Rainbow Crab, Nigerian Moon Crab, and the Patriot Crab and they originate in Africa's West Coast. They grow to about 4 inches (12 cm) in size, although some have been known to get to 8 inches (24 cm) and they can live up to 8 years.
The Behavior of the Rainbow Crabs
Like most crab species, Rainbow Crabs are natural loners. They often become more aggressive as they age. They are not social and do not need to be kept in groups. In fact, they will guaranteed fight fellow members of their own species.
Rainbow Land Crabs are found along river and costal areas of west Africa. With a blue to purple carapace and bright orange to red legs, they make an attractive pet.
Did you know that? Crabs do not breathe air when they are out of the water, but use oxygen reserves that they have built up with their gills. Like all invertebrates, this crab is very sensitive to the presence of copper in its environment.
Just like fish, blue crabs breathe using gills. However, unlike fish, blue crabs can survive out of water for long periods of time-even over 24 hours-as long as their gills are kept moist.
Crabs breathe through gills. For gills to work, they must be able to take in oxygen and transport it into the animal's bloodstream. The gills of crabs are located under the carapace near the first pair of walking legs. The oxygen that crabs need is taken into the gills either through water or moisture in the air.
Blue king crabs are the rarest of all the king crab species in Alaska.
While their name seems self-explanatory, purple shore crabs don't always grow up to have plum-toned shells. You may find some adults with colors ranging from yellow or olive green to reddish brown. Juveniles have an even wider range of color and pattern, but all ages have claws with reddish spots and white tips.
A fully albino crab is very rare.”
This aggressive personality is a blue crab. Their scientific name, callinectes sapidus, roughly translates to beautiful swimmer. It's true, but ignores the blue crab's evil temperament.
Dead Animals
Decaying matter and carrion like dead fish and dead shrimp are important for a crab's diet. Because they are not the best hunters given their eyesight and relatively slow pace, they like to scavenge for dead meat as opposed to hunting for living meat sources.
It is perfectly fine for you to hold your hermit crabs. However you have to respect the crabs' ability to pinch. They are in fact CRABS and most people associate crabs with claws. The key thing to remember when you are holding your hermit crabs is to not take your eyes off of them.
Candy Crab
Scientists named this crab for its spectacularly vibrant colors. The candy crab camouflages itself according to the shade of the soft coral in which it lives, and it can be white, pink, yellow or red.
Ocypode ryderi, also known as the pink ghost crab, is a species of ghost crab found on the east coast of Africa from the Eastern Cape Region to Kenya.
The Strawberry Crab, also known as the Red Boxing Crab, originates from the pristine waters of Hawaii. They are bright pink with many small white spots.
Where do spider crabs live? Japanese spider crabs live on the seafloor along Japan's Pacific coast. They are found primarily on the sandy and rocky continental shelf and slope. When adult crabs are ready to spawn, they migrate to shallower waters, about 160 feet (50 meters) deep.
Queen crabs (more commonly known as snow crab) are distributed widely across subpolar and Arctic regions. In Alaska, queen crabs comprise a panmictic (randomly breeding) population that spans the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas (Albrecht et al.
Golden king crab (Lithodes aequispinus) are found from British Columbia to the Aleutian Islands and Japan. When compared to red and blue king crabs, golden king crab are smaller in size, averaging 5–8 lb. They have a golden-colored shell and five pairs of legs, the front pair carrying their claws.
A survey of the population revealed thousands of tons of crabs, more than eleven billion animals estimates had said were on the Pacific Ocean floor, simply weren't there.
Researchers describe the first crab from the Cretaceous dinosaur era preserved in amber. The study used micro CT to examine and describe Cretapsara athanata, the oldest modern-looking crab (approximately 100 million years old) and the most complete fossil crab ever discovered.
A longstanding related question: Do they feel pain? Yes, researchers now say. Not only do crabs suffer pain, a new study found, but they retain a memory of it (assuming they aren't already dead on your dinner plate). The scientists say its time for new laws to consider the suffering of all crustaceans.
The circulatory system of adult blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, was mapped by either injecting barium sulfate into intact animals followed by radiography or by resin corrosion casts (Batsons Monomer). Seven arteries arise from the heart.
Like lobsters, crabs are often thrown into pots of scalding-hot water and boiled alive. The crabs will fight so hard against a clearly painful death that their claws often break off in their struggle to escape.
The Chasmagnathus granulatus crab leads a simple life. It spends its days burrowing for food and trying to avoid its nemesis, the seagull. But recent research has shown that despite its rudimentary brain, this crab has a highly sophisticated memory.
