The Onion model is designed to encourage literacy educators and subject teachers to develop a spiral rather than hierarchical pathway to support students in generating successful academic genres.
The Onion Model
Culture can be broken down into layers: The outer layers are composed of the artefacts and products as well as patterns of behaviour. The next layer encompasses the beliefs, norms and attitudes of that culture. The middle of the onion represents the underlying cultural assumptions and values.
The onion graphic tool is used to examine actors' public positions (the outer layer), interests (the middle layer) and needs (inner layer) (Fisher et al., 2000: 27) (see Figure 3). It can be used to examine actors' competing interests and to identify possible trade-offs.
The aim of the tools is to make subjective conflict perceptions more transparent, and to enhance reflection and communication. The tools presented are: Conflict wheel, conflict tree, conflict mapping, glasl's escalation model, conflict perspective analysis, needs-fears mapping, and a multi-causal role model.

The Onion model is based upon the idea that the layers of a conflict are much like that of an onion: there are many dynamics to be considered, but only those on the surface are visible, until we start to peel of the layers to see what lies at the core.

An onion diagram is a chart that shows the dependencies and relationships between the different parts of a process or organization. For example, you can use an onion diagram anywhere there is a hierarchy. The structure of an onion diagram mimics that of an actual onion.
This means to delve into a problem, one layer at a time, to thoroughly understand what's causing all the trouble. As metaphors go, there are worse.
