Stapleton's own instincts proved correct on Thursday, when the kelpie – officially called Capree Eve – sold under the hammer for $49,000 at a combined online and in-person auction, marking her out as the most expensive kelpie in Australia.
Capree Stud from Newbridge south of Bathurst sold a 20-month-old kelpie for $49,000 at their sale on Thursday. The previous record was set by Hoover, a male kelpie from western Victoria, who sold for $35,000 in 2021.
Expect to pay a breeder $500 to $1,500 for a kelpie puppy.
David and Sarah Lee sold their kelpie Eulooka Hoover for $35,200 in the Casterton Kelpie Association's Annual Working Dog Auction. That figure smashes the auction's previous record of $22,200 and also beats the national record of $25,000 set at Jerilderie in 2019.
