Curly hair-acral keratoderma-caries syndrome is an extremely rare ectodermal dysplasia syndrome characterized by premature loss of curly, brittle, dry hair, premature loss of teeth due to caries, nail dystrophy with thickening of the finger- and toe-nails, acral keratoderma and hypohidrosis.
Children with CFC Syndrome usually have sparse, slow growing, fine or thick, curly scalp hair that is abnormally dry and brittle. They also have absent or sparse eyebrows and eyelashes.
Hair curl or wavy coat is a dominant characteristic caused by 2 seperate known mutations in the KRT71 gene. This gene codes for keratin, a protein that determines the type of hair a dog will have. These mutations are fixed in some breeds such as C2 in Curly-coat Retrievers.
Genes control curly hair
So far, the main driver to have been identified is a gene that produces a protein called trichohyalin (TCHH), which strengthens the growing hair.
Type 1A hair is very straight and fine, with no waves or curls whatsoever. This hair type tends to get very oily and requires frequent shampooing. It is the rarest hair type and is common among women of Asian descent.
Less than 20% of people have naturally curly hair.
The condition affects a dog's skin and eyes. Affected dogs are unable to produce tears due to the lack of watery secretions from the lacrimal glands, making their eyes very sore. Their skin becomes very dry and flaky, particularly around the foot, and this can make walking and standing difficult and painful.

When an increase of androgens occurs in either sex, due to any of the hormonal shifts mentioned above, this can actually trigger a change of muscular shape in the hair follicle from round to flat. This, in turn, can alter the texture of the hair strand from straight to curly!

Your Fifties
Throughout menopause, your hair's texture changes. It often happens around the age of 51 and might be the reason why your hair will change from curly to straight.
And despite a proliferation of poodles and Labradoodles in the world, true curly coats in dogs are not that common. To have curly hair, a puppy must inherit two mutations of the KRT71 gene—inheriting just one will result in wavy, not curly hair. So your curly-haired pup is a rare dog breed, indeed!
Dry eye curly coat syndrome is an inherited disease that affects the eyes, skin, and feet of dogs. Affected dogs are usually diagnosed between 2-10 weeks of age with keratoconjuncitivits sicca and ichthyosiform dermatosis. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, commonly called “dry eye”, is the result of abnormal tear production.
Coily Curls
The last, but most rare type of curl is the coily curl. This curl type is similar to that of an afro and when observed carefully, looks like the angular letter 'Z'. These curls require the most amount of moisture, as the hair type is much thicker than the other curl types.
Many Asians have naturally straight hair, but there is a significant group of us who do have naturally curly or wavy hair! However, because it's the norm to see straight and sleek hair, curly haired boys and girls tend to think that their hair is some kind of unruly straight hair that isn't behaving.
