If your child sometimes refuses oral medications, we recommend calling the sedative “happy juice” to encourage the child to drink it. The sedative is short acting and generally starts to work within 20-30 minutes. While some patients may become excited, 90 percent became relaxed and silly.
This “Juice” is typically a mixture of 2 different medications. One is an antihistamine (similar to Benadryl) and is used in most mixtures. The name of this medication is Hydroxyzine. The other medication will either be Valium, Versed (similar to Valium but more common with younger children), or Demerol.
Clear, see-through liquids include: Water. Clear fruit juices such as apple juice and white cranberry juice. Plain tea or black coffee (NO milk or creamer)
Why does your anesthesiologist require you to drink Gatorade before surgery? Gatorade helps to increase your comfort before surgery and to decrease your nausea after surgery. The carbohydrates in Gatorade help reduce your body's stress response to surgery.
What kind of fluids are we talking about that are OK to consume before surgery? Clear liquids—something you can see through. Some options include water, apple juice, Gatorade, black coffee, or tea without any milk or cream. Liquids should not contain alcohol.
People who are already in hospital the night before an operation are usually given medicine to help them sleep or a sedative to reduce anxiety. Benzodiazepines are often used for this purpose. These drugs reduce anxiety, help you to relax, and make you sleepy at the same time.
The best meals before surgery will include a balance of lean protein, unprocessed carbohydrates, vegetables, and healthy (mainly plant-based) fats. Lean protein sources could include eggs, chicken, and fish. You can add a range of healthy carbohydrates like bananas, buckwheat, quinoa, sweet potatoes, and more.

According to the AHS ERAS Nutrition Working Group Consensus: Juice as Carbohydrate Loading Products, all adult patients undergoing surgery may benefit from a carb load of 500 mL of clear apple juice or cranberry cocktail 2 to 3 hours prior to surgery time.
The process of waking up from anesthesia is known as emergence. During emergence, the anesthesiologist will slowly reduce the amount of anesthetic drugs in the body. This helps to reduce the intensity of the effects of anesthesia and allows the patient to regain consciousness.
Any food or drink in the patient's body could lead to aspiration. This is when food or stomach acid travels to the lungs making breathing difficult or impossible. To avoid aspiration, patients should not eat or drink before the surgery.
The Don'ts
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery. This includes water, coffee, gum, or mints. If you do, it may be necessary to cancel your surgery. Do not smoke or use chewing tobacco after midnight the night before your surgery.
Just before going into the operating room, your child will get a medicine (we sometimes refer to it as "giggle juice") to help him relax. It can make him giggly, sleepy and unsteady, so once he's taken this medicine, he may not walk around, because he may fall and get hurt.

Tart Cherries and Tart Cherry Juice
For years, runners have been adding tart cherry juice to their post-run protein smoothies when training. That's because this functional food not only tastes great and provides a healthy source of carbohydrates, it also has been proven to reduce pain and inflammation.
Things To Follow Two to Three Days Before Surgery
Maintain a healthy and well-balanced diet by eating a variety of foods, including lean meats like chicken and fish, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are important for keeping your energy levels up both before and after your surgery. You can increase your carb intake by consuming high-fiber foods like whole grains and legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas, soybeans), which can also prevent constipation.
Both are good as oral rehydration solutions, but Pedialyte may be better in cases of diarrhea (since sugar promotes diarrhea and Pediatlyte is lower in sugar). For sports, Gatorade's high sugar content may help fuel athletic performance and duration.
Within 24 hours of any surgical procedure that involves anesthesia, you should avoid high-fiber foods of all types, including fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains. During the two weeks leading up to surgery, you should avoid eating fish or taking fish oil or omega-3 supplements.
Eating foods rich in protein is important for healing and repairing tissues. Protein also helps your body make new blood cells, which are necessary for wound healing. Good sources of protein include lean meats, poultry, fish, tofu, eggs, legumes, and nuts.
