Water is the best choice for quenching your thirst. Coffee and tea, without added sweeteners, are healthy choices, too. Some beverages should be limited or consumed in moderation, including fruit juice, milk, and those made with low-calorie sweeteners, like diet drinks.
The Eatwell Guide says we should drink 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day. Water, lower-fat milk and sugar-free drinks, including tea and coffee, all count.
Eating hydrating foods is another alternative if you cannot force yourself to drink any more water. You can start with watermelon, celery, strawberries, cucumbers, and greens, but also try bone broth and soup. Any soup contains plenty of fluid, and it can be a delicious way to stay hydrated.
Milk is more hydrating than water
For example, milk was found to be even more hydrating than plain water because it contains the sugar lactose, some protein and some fat, all of which help to slow the emptying of fluid from the stomach and keep hydration happening over a longer period.

The levels of electrolytes (sodium and potassium) are moderate and sensible with 160 mg of sodium and 45mg of potassium per 12 fluid ounce serving. You can also find Gatorade varieties with higher sodium, zero sugar or no calories depending on your needs.
Is it OK to drink electrolytes every day? You can drink electrolytes every day (or choose to consume a supplement instead). This is especially necessary if you exercise and/or sweat often. Electrolytes will help replace minerals, such as sodium, magnesium, and potassium, that are lost when you sweat or get sick.
When You're Drinking Too Much Water. In most people, with normal kidney function, drinking too much water can irritate your bladder increasing the risk of urine leakage. As fluid intake increases, the amount of urine made will increase along with it.
What is this? Fasting for a week may result in adverse health and metabolic changes such as dehydration, a loss of lean muscle mass, hyperuricemia, hyponatremia, protein-sparing, sodium, and potassium-sparing, decreased serum calcium and magnesium levels, and acidic urine.
In most cases, water is the perfect beverage for staying hydrated. However, drinking only water for an extended period of time is bad for your health. Not only does it lead to poor fluid balance, it can cause long term health conditions.
Lemon water is beneficial for hydration.
Some people might find it difficult to drink plain water, especially if they do not like the flavor of local tap water. So adding freshly squeezed lemon juice to a liter of drinking water and drinking lemon water throughout the day can make it easier to drink.
Here is one more reason to enjoy that morning cup of joe: “Coffee counts toward your daily water intake,” says Lauren DeWolf, MS, RD, a registered dietitian with Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Centers. The water in coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages helps us meet our daily fluid needs.
But Gatorade contains high levels of sugar and food dyes, which may increase people's risk of certain health conditions, including weight gain and type 2 diabetes. Gatorade and other sports drinks are not inherently healthy or healthier than other beverages.
Watermelon (92%) It's no surprise that watermelon will hydrate you. But, like tomatoes and other red fruits and veggies, it's also a great source of lycopene. If you have questions about how much water you should be getting, reach out to your primary care physician.
