If your IUD is left in your uterus past the expiration date, the most serious danger would be infection. Serious infections can cause infertility. The other risk is that an expired IUD will not be an effective birth control method.
IUDs have expiration dates because the FDA approves them only for certain lengths of time. Beyond the expiration date, there's no guarantee that the IUD will work to prevent pregnancy. There's also a risk for infection if an IUD is left in for too long past its expiration date.
I need a new one
Mirena can remain in the uterus for up to 8 years to prevent pregnancy. If you are also using Mirena to treat heavy periods, you will need a new one after 5 years. If you choose to continue using Mirena, you'll make an appointment with your healthcare provider to remove Mirena and place a new one.
