Now, the fast food chain has officially changed its Chinese business name from Maidanglao (a literal translation of “McDonald's”) to Jingongmen — or, “Golden Arches.”
The new company holds the franchise for the mainland and Hong Kong markets. In other words, it is no longer a subsidiary wholly owned by the US fast-food giant, but a subsidiary incorporated by CITIC and Carlyle. Thus, its legal name should also be changed from 'Maidanglao', the Chinese transliteration of McDonald's.
Hong Kong — "Mak Kee"
The land that brought us the ever-so-trendy bubble cone. Residents of Hong Kong refer to McDonald's as Mak Kee. With a menu so drastically different from other locations, its no wonder their slang is unique.
In Japan, McDonald's is Makudonarudo (マクドナルド), so Donarudo Makudonarudo has a pleasant ring to it, just like Ronald McDonald sounds nice in English. Plus, “Donarudo” (ドナルド) is a famous character name in Japan thanks to Donald Duck, making the name familiar and easy to say.
