In the wizarding world, J.K. Rowling has identified purple as a colour associated with noble, helpful magic – which is why Dumbledore is represented by the colour purple on this very website.
Throughout the series, purple is a dominant color, from the Knight Bus to wand sparks. Purple is also the color, along with green, that wizards use in the Muggle community to reveal themselves to each other. It's a neutral color that represents the wizarding community at large.
I have seen in some games and (most disturbingly) new merch that the color for Hufflepuff is purple.
The colors that represent Hufflepuffs are yellow and black, while the badger serves as their animal mascot. There are no metallic tones in Hufflepuff as they're a more humble, less flashy house.
Gryffindor (red and gold) is connected to fire; Slytherin (green and silver) to water; Hufflepuff (yellow and black, representing wheat and soil) to earth; and Ravenclaw (blue and bronze; sky and eagle feathers) to air.

Angelina Johnson is a member of Gryffindor House. She is a tall black girl with long black hair, which she wears in plaits, and brown eyes. She is two years ahead of Harry, and plays Chaser for the Gryffindor Quidditch Team.

Blood purity
Muggle-born Slytherins existed, but were very rare, as noted insultingly by Scabior the Snatcher. There had also been definite examples of half-bloods sorted into the house, including Tom Riddle, Dolores Umbridge, and Severus Snape.
