-This drug should not be used in patients with diarrhea complicated by fever or blood in the stool or diarrhea caused by pathogens other than Escherichia coli.
If you are taking rifaximin to treat traveler's diarrhea, your symptoms should improve within 24 to 48 hours after you start taking the medication. If your symptoms do not go away or they get worse, or if you develop a fever or bloody diarrhea, call your doctor.
Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice during rifaximin treatment due to the risk of increased rifaximin exposure and adverse reactions. Rifaximin is a P-gp substrate and grapefruit juice is a P-gp inhibitor.
Therefore, rifaximin therapy may help normalize intestinal motility and improve the absorption capacity of carbohydrates, thus contributing to gain weight.
