Mel Robbins explains that she first started to use the 5 second rule as a way of getting out of bed at a time that was both difficult for her and her family. The process was simple. Counting backwards from 5-4-3-2-1 and immediately acting at the end of the count, and before the mind creates a reason not to act.
The rule that is explained in her book [available here on Amazon (opens in new tab)] is the idea that you have the instinct to act on a goal (or an unpleasant task) if you physically move within 5 seconds. If 5 seconds pass, your brain will remove the need, and you are less likely to act as time goes on.
A piece of food will pick up more bacteria the longer it spends on the floor. So food left there for 5 seconds or less will probably collect fewer bacteria than food sitting there for a longer time. But fast may not be fast enough. Bacteria can attach to your food as soon as it hits the floor.
As Robbins explains, her “5-second rule” is very simple: It's about the moment you're in a situation where you know what you should do “but you start to hesitate, or excuses start to fill your mind.”
Follow the 3-3-3 rule.
Look around you and name three things you see. Then, name three sounds you hear. Finally, move three parts of your body — your ankle, fingers, or arm.
According to Robbins, when you count backwards from five, you're using a form of metacognition to override the patterns that get encoded in your basal ganglia and draw your focus to your pre-frontal cortex, the part of your brain that gives you control over your thoughts and actions.
