All services use the body composition test. It requires all military personnel to weigh in and have their height measured. When out of height/weight standards, body fat is measured using the circumference test -- measuring the neck and waist.

Military weight standards
For each height range, the maximum allowable weights work out to a BMI of 25–27.5, and minimum allowable weights are for a BMI of 19. This allows both men and women to carry a healthy amount of fat mass, which is necessary for both health and performance.
The assessment tests muscular endurance and cardiovascular strength, through push-ups, sit-ups and a 20-metre shuttle run test. The test is mandatory for entry into training as it confirms the recruits' baseline fitness and through scientific studies, also provides an indicator for susceptibility to injury.
To be eligible, you must be able to achieve a minimum of 2 push-ups, 20 sit-ups and 5.5 shuttle run score. What about weight? The maximum allowable BMI for entry to the Army is 32.9 (29.9 for helicopter Pilots). BMIs of less than 18.5 are considered too low as they present a risk of injury during training.

5 to 9 percent

10-12% body fat: This level of body fat is a sustainable level for men. Your abs can be seen, but aren't as chiseled or defined as a man with 6-7% body fat. This is the body fat percentage that is the perfect beach body most people strive for.

You can still serve the U.S. Armed Forces if you are obese by receiving a medical waiver. Approximately 20% of new recruits need a waiver for their weight to attend boot camp.
