More importantly, Reed avocados are often celebrated as the best-tasting avocado variety thanks to their rich, nutty flavor. Reed avocados are classified as type A avocados, meaning their skin remains green even when ripe.
Hass avocado trees are type A, meaning that they flower from February through May. When the flowers first open in the morning, they are female until they close in the afternoon. The following afternoon, they reopen as pollen-producing male flowers. So, Hass avocado trees can be categorized as somewhat self-pollinating.
You can get fruit with just one type of avocado, although multiple trees help. But for a cracker crop at your place, you can try to squeeze in a plant from the B side or just graft a branch of a B type onto your tree!
Super Hass is a Type A and Joey is an example of Type B. Super Hass avocados ripen from September through October.
The most popular varieties of avocado are the Hass (shown above) with its pebbly purple-black skin when ripe, and the pear shaped Shepard which has smooth, thin, green skin. Because Fuerte avocados have a higher water content than their Hass cousins, they also have lower levels of fat. It's the fat in Hass avocados that offer their richer flavor, making them more adaptable and suitable in recipes across the board.
Green-skins tend to have less fat and oil. That makes them healthier by some standards but less delicious by others. However, Evans says “when you want a real tasty avocado you got to eat a green-skin avocado. You know, a green-skin avocado is far more flavorful than the Hass avocado.”

H June to August The fruit is medium sized with green leathery pliable skin and a small seed. This is an excellent choice for backyards, higher yields in trees that are cross pollinated with a 'B'variety avocado near by.
Shepard is a 'B' type avocado, which means it needs to be paired with an 'A' variety for good fruit set. Fruit is pear shaped, small to medium in size, with thick, easy to peel skin. Nice flavour and high oil content.
Hass avocado trees have high yields compared to other varieties and a mature tree can produce over a million blooms. Most Hass trees bloom twice a year and occasionally there is a third bloom.
Hass avocado flowers are both male and female opening at different times of the day. They are compatible and self fertile, Hass does not require a pollinator. However, if you were to look for a suitable pollinator, bacon, Zutano and Fuerte are suitable varieties. Avocados are pollinated by insects, including bees.

Compared to other avocado trees, which can grow up to 80 feet, a Wurtz avocado tree grows to about 10 feet. Due to its small size, the Wurtz avocado tree can be grown in a large container (such as a half wine barrel) and is a good option for smaller front and back yards.
Each variety has its own age when avocado trees produce fruit, but if you're looking for the fastest growing variety, it's a tie between the Hass and Fuerte variety. Both avocado trees take around three to four years to produce fruit.
