For IBD patients, low-impact/moderate exercise is encouraged. Some low-impact activities include, but are not limited to, brisk walking, bicycling, and swimming, yoga, elliptical and rowing. Low impact exercises don't mean they are easy or ineffective so don't let this discourage you from trying them.
Exercise may decrease CD activity and reduce psychological stress. Current research also suggests that low-intensity exercise does not exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms and does not lead to flare-ups. Furthermore, exercise appears to reduce CD symptoms and improve QOL.
Light to moderate exercise is believed to be safe for people with Crohn's or colitis. In people with inactive or mildly active IBD that are sedentary, moderate walking or yoga can improve quality of life and stress levels, and typically does not worsen symptoms of IBD.
Stacking research has shown that complementary, nonpharmacological therapies including yoga, mindfulness, biofeedback, and diet changes can be used in tandem with medication to help reduce stress and calm Crohn's symptoms.
Although there's no firm evidence that any particular foods cause Crohn's disease, certain things seem to aggravate flare-ups. So a food diary can help you identify personal triggers. Beyond that, limit dairy products, eating smaller meals, stay hydrated, and try to avoid caffeine, alcohol, and carbonation.
According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, foods high in fiber and fat, dairy products, and carbonated beverages such as soda can trigger a flare-up. The best option is to stick to fresh fruits and vegetables, along with lean meats, says Dr. Sultan.
So much so, that a study in the February 2021 Inflammatory Bowel Diseases found that coffee had little to no association with Crohn's disease, though even those results were inconsistent. In either case, the high amount of caffeine in coffee can aggravate certain unpleasant Crohn's symptoms.
When symptoms of Crohn's disease become severe, bowel rest gives the intestines a chance to heal. This means the only food is clear liquids.
To help your body digest fibrous foods during a flare, the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation (CCF) recommends avoiding the skins of fruits and vegetables; raw produce, especially cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower; and high-fiber whole grains, and opt for low-fiber fruits such as bananas and melons.
Rest is crucial during a Crohn's or UC flare
In other words, rest is crucial and naps are always a good idea. Of course, if your body isn't calling for rest, then that is another story. But if you feel you need it, go for it!
A common symptom of Crohn's disease is fatigue, which can occur during flare-ups of the condition and periods of remission. A range of factors can cause this fatigue, including the body's response to inflammation, anxiety about Crohn's disease, anemia, nutritional deficiencies, and pain that affects sleep.
You may find that your Crohn's or Colitis makes it hard to get enough nutrients into your body. This may contribute to you feeling fatigued. If your gut is inflamed and sore it cannot soak up (absorb) the nutrients your body needs.
Anemia: If you have Crohn's, you can have intestinal bleeding. The disease can also make it tougher for you to take in iron and other nutrients. That can lead to anemia, which means you have less blood to carry oxygen to the rest of your body. That brings fatigue.
Eating certain foods can sometimes help relieve the symptoms of a Crohn's flare-up. Refined grains, low fiber fruits, lean proteins, and yogurt are some options.
Lisa Simon, RD, a registered dietitian in London, says there's a wide variety of healthy fats and we should encourage more people with Crohn's disease to eat foods such as avocados, nuts and seeds (unless your doctor says to be careful with these because of strictures), tahini, and extra-virgin olive oil.
Do: White Bread. Toasted bread or a bagel made with refined white flour are good for breakfast or as a sandwich base. Look for brands with 2 grams of fiber or less per serving. Low-fiber grains are easier to digest when you have Crohn's.
Raw fruit and fruit juices with pulp are foods to avoid during a Crohn's flare-up. Other examples include: dried fruit, such as raisins. prune juice.

Does Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis get worse with age? Both conditions can change as you age, but not necessarily for the worse. For some people, their condition may improve over time due to a treatment plan that works for them. For others, it may worsen or stay the same.
