In the largest study of its kind, the National Institutes of Health determined that 88 percent of all learning-to-read problems were caused by a weakness in one specific cognitive skill: phonemic awareness, which is the ability hear, blend, unglue and manipulate sounds in a word.
Difficulty seeing (and occasionally hearing) similarities and differences in letters and words. Inability to sound out the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word. Difficulty spelling. Spending an unusually long time completing tasks that involve reading or writing.
Signs of dyslexia include talking later than other children, trouble learning simple rhymes, struggling to follow directions, or having difficulty learning left and right. In school, signs of dyslexia include struggling with reading, writing, spelling, and languages.
Nothing affects your chances at succeeding in school like not having the skills to read, spell, and write. This is, unfortunately, what dyslexia is all about. It can be the one impediment to achieving one's goals in work and life.
Many people with dyslexia often think in images as opposed to words, which is attributed to the unique activations in their brains. People with dyslexia are also more likely to form 3D spatial images in their minds than non-dyslexic people.
Great at Connecting with Others
Dyslexics have a great ability to sense, understand, and respond (emotionally and practically) to how people feel. This is because they are naturally visual-spatial learners and cannot automatically rely on text and audition for information.
Dyslexia is not an emotional disorder, but the frustrating nature of this learning disability can lead to feelings of anxiety, anger, low self–esteem and depression. Read scenarios in the dyslexic child's life that can give rise to social and emotional difficulties.
There is a common misconception that dyslexia only affects the ability to read and write. In reality, dyslexia can affect memory, organisation, time-keeping, concentration, multi-tasking and communication.
Dyslexia, in its most common form, is a very intractable reading problem caused by a genetic, hereditary difference in the way the brain processes language.
The main problem in dyslexia is trouble recognizing phonemes (pronounced: FO-neems). These are the basic sounds of speech (the "b" sound in "bat" is a phoneme, for example). So it's a struggle to make the connection between the sound and the letter symbol for that sound, and to blend sounds into words.
Anger. Many of the emotional problems caused by dyslexia occur out of frustration with school or social situations. Social scientists have frequently observed that frustration produces anger. This can be clearly seen in many children with dyslexia.
Many people also have specific sensitivities to their environment such as certain fabrics they cannot wear, and food they cannot tolerate, etc. Many adults with dyslexia see themselves as more emotionally sensitive than other people.
Use multisensory input and activities to give learners more than one way to make connections and learn concepts. For example, use flash cards, puppets, story videos and real objects in the classroom. When learners use more than one sense at a time, their brain is stimulated in a variety of ways.
Dyslexia and Problem Behaviors
Children with dyslexia often feel as though they are letting others down because they are unable to perform at the same levels as their peers. Some problem behaviors that children with dyslexia are vulnerable to include: Arguing and fighting with peers and siblings.
An often unconsidered and undetected consequence of dyslexia, anxiety is widely considered as a secondary symptom of dyslexia. Specific situations, tasks or events can trigger stress, anxiety and other negative thoughts in dyslexics.
Adults with dyslexia can also feel confused, bewildered, embarrassed, ashamed and guilty. One way that these feelings can affect relationships is that a dyslexic adult could find being in a relationship with or married to a person without dyslexia embarrassing.
What does this mean for dyslexics? In summary, stress and anxiety will prevent learning. Simply thinking about or remembering the previous experiences will likely illicit the same physiological response and prevent learning.
Today, I will discuss how people with dyslexia can break this barrier and become outgoing individuals. Communication is crucial for anyone who wants to succeed not just professionally but personally, as well. A dyslexic person tends to be shy and be reluctant to open up to others.
Vision, Reading, and Spelling:
Complains of dizziness, headaches or stomach aches while reading. Confused by letters, numbers, words, sequences, or verbal explanations. Reading or writing shows repetitions, additions, transpositions, omissions, substitutions, and reversals in letters, numbers and/or words.
Often people with dyslexia have an excellent long term memory. To remember something like a phone number, or how to spell a word, you need to transfer it to your long term memory. The best way to do that is through spaced repetition. That is, try to recall a fact with longer and longer gaps between testing.
