A deep-chested dog usually has a chest that extends to or below their elbows, making them proportionately deeper and narrower than normal or barrel-chested dogs. Deep-chestedness is proportionate, and although many large breeds are represented, small and medium dog breeds can be deep-chested also.
The term barrel-chested refers to dogs that have a very round chest that takes on the appearance of a barrel. These dogs have a deep ribcage and a 'heavy' chest.
There are basically four shapes of the canine chest; the oval, the oval-tapered (egg-shaped), the round or barrel, and the narrow chest.

Barrel chest is a visible symptom of COPD, emphysema, osteoarthritis, and CF. The lungs fill with air and are unable to fully breathe out. This gives the chest a pronounced barrel shape. The treatment of barrel chest focuses on managing symptoms of the underlying condition and limiting the extent of lung damage.
In healthy people, the ribs slope downward slightly from back to front. But in people with a barrel chest, the shape of the rib cage tends to round outward and your chest area starts to look as round as a barrel. Think of how your chest expands when you take a deep breath in and hold it.
It occurs because the lungs are chronically overinflated with air, so the rib cage stays partially expanded all the time. This makes breathing less efficient and aggravates shortness of breath.

Deep-chested dogs have narrow, tall rib cages that fall lower on their body – usually below the elbows of the dog's front legs. Their chest is typically egg- or oval-shaped, and taller than it is wide.
The chest is deep, muscular and moderately broad with the loins broad, strong and muscular and the flanks deep. The dog is strongly coupled. Hindquarters: The hindquarters are broad, strong and muscular.
Chest tap procedure: Clip at least a 4" square area over the 7-10th intercostal space. Air will be removed easiest from the dorsal third of the chest, and the patient can be in sternal or lateral recumbency. Ventral taps will remove the most fluid with the patient in sternal recumbency or standing.
The topline is level, back strong, with ribs well sprung, not barrel-chested. The chest is deep, muscular and moderately broad. The loins are broad, deep and muscular with deep flanks; showing strength joining the fore and hindquarters.
Round chest: This applies to most dogs (Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, etc.). Put your hands on the widest portion of the chest, at the widest, highest point or top of the dome shape. Keel-shaped chest: Greyhounds, Doberman Pinschers and some German Shepherds have this type of chest.
Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) is a life-threatening disorder most commonly seen in large, deep-chested dogs, although any dog may be affected. In its early stage, the stomach fills with gas, causing a simple gastric dilatation or "bloat". Sometimes, the condition progresses no further than a bloat.
adjective. having a large, broad chest: a deep-chested man. coming from deep in the chest: a deep-chested cough.
Large-breed and deep-chested dogs are at the highest risk of developing bloat. Predisposed breeds include: Great Danes (39% of Great Danes will experience bloat during their lifetime)
Border Collies have solid, muscular bodies with straight, strong backs and deep chests. They have oval eyes; medium-sized ears that are set well apart and carried erect or semi-erect.
Bloat or Torsion: Because Rottweilers are large, deep-chested dogs, they are prone to bloat or torsion, a life-threatening condition that generally occurs in older dogs. Bloat occurs when a dog's stomach becomes distended with gas or air then twists.
The Shih Tzu is slightly longer than tall. Fault - Legginess. Chest - Broad and deep with good spring-of-rib, however, not barrel- chested. Depth of ribcage should extend to just below elbow.
Pet parents may be able to decrease the risk of bloat in dogs by following these easy tips: Feed your dog small meals 3 to 4 times a day. Buy “portion pacers” or special bowls that make dogs work harder for their food, which slows them down.
Standard Poodles, like many large, deep-chested breeds, have an increased risk of bloat, a potentially fatal condition in which the stomach twists on itself, trapping air inside. In fact, according to a 2000 JAVMA study, 2.4% of Standard Poodles suffer from gastric dilatation-volvulus each year.
Lifestyle Choices and Prevention
Exercise: A full stomach is heavy and more likely to twist during exercise. Never walk immediately after eating. Indeed, ensure the dog is quiet and rested for 60 - 90 minutes after each meal. Avoid stress: Anxious, stressed dogs are more prone to bloat.
Barrel chest generally refers to a broad, deep chest found on a patient. A barrel chested person will usually have a naturally large ribcage, very round (i.e., vertically cylindrical) torso, large lung capacity, and can potentially have great upper body strength.
Barrel chest is not usually painful. It a sign of severe underlying lung disease or damage, so the symptoms generally relate to the cause.
