In 2014, a dog named Shakey Jakey made headlines when he won a dog race in Australia with a 22-length lead. Jakey's accomplishment wasn't much of a surprise, though, considering he's a Greyhound, the fastest dog breed in the world. But Greyhounds aren't the only speedy pups out there.
Greyhound. R. Bitzer Photography / Adobe Stock Greyhounds are the fastest dog breed and can run at speeds of 40–45 mph. Despite their aerodynamic build, greyhounds are actually quite calm—and maybe even a little lazy.
Saluki. One of the most ancient breeds of dog, the Saluki is thought to date back to ancient Egypt. With a top speed of 42mph they are the second fastest dog breed.
The Saluki — Putting the Capital “S” in Swiftness
A feather-footed cousin of the Greyhound, the Saluki has been clocked at nearly 43 mph, a speed recorded in the 1996 edition of the Guinness Book of Records. It may be that over distances of more than half a mile, the Saluki is faster than the Greyhound.
— Greyhounds can beat cheetahs in a race. While cheetahs can run twice as fast as greyhounds, they can only maintain that 70 mph speed for about thirty seconds. A Greyhound can maintain a 35 mph speed for about seven miles. So, the cheetah may start out first, but the greyhound will soon overtake him.
A greyhound would complete that same race in 5.33 seconds.” From quick-sprinting hounds to the endurance-racing husky, we've got the scoop on Olympian-caliber canines, and what makes them so fast. A greyhound could beat Usain Bolt's 100 meter world record in 5.33 seconds.

Greyhound. Originally bred to be hunting dogs, Greyhounds are widely accepted to be the fastest dog breed. For decades, Greyhounds have been used in dog racing. A highly energetic breed, it comes as no surprise that their legs can carry them as fast as 45 miles per hour.
Border Collie
Considered to be the most intelligent dog breed, she not only herds animals at blistering speed but also performs amazing feats and memorizes bus routes (it's a fun story). She can probably do your taxes, too, but might require at least two days of training.
Australian Shepherd
These working dogs need daily exercise to get all their energy out and can do so at speeds of up to 30 mph.
Greyhound vs Whippet speed
Greyhounds are one of the fastest dog breeds and can reach speeds of 40-45 miles per hour. Whippets and Salukis,, sometimes known as the Arabian Greyhound are also very fast with Whippets reaching speeds of 35 miles per hour.
The results show the trained greyhounds galloped faster than the captive cheetahs, with a top speed of 68 kilometres per hour compared with the cheetah's 64 kilometres per hour.
Everyone knows Greyhounds are fast, but exactly how fast are they? Most place their maximum speed at around 45 mph—a bit slower than a quarter horse, and much slower than a cheetah.
Even run-of-the-mill joggers typically do between 3.2 and 4.2 meters per second, which means they can outrun dogs at distances greater than two kilometers.
In the 100-meter dash, Bolt motors at 27.78 mph, slightly faster than a typical big, athletic dog. But it's nowhere near the top speed of a star greyhound like Shakey, who lives in Australia.
Usually, the pig starts the fight but the dog finishes it. Pigs have no defense against the jaws of the dog. It only takes seconds for the dog to rip the ears off the pig and maul them, often resulting in the pig's death or thousands of dollars in medical bills and permanent disfiguration.
