Chromosomal microarray analysis is recommended for individuals with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, intellectual developmental disorder, or global developmental delay.
Our ASD specialists are trained to use a test called the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS, for short). The ADOS is a test that helps a trained evaluator make objective ratings of the child's behavior and determine whether the behavior pattern suggests a diagnosis of ASD.
1 Some of the most commonly used tests include the Checklist of Autism in Toddlers (CHAT), the modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT), the Screening Tool for Autism in Two-Year-Olds (STAT), and the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ).
Getting an autism spectrum diagnosis is often a two-stage process. With children, the first stage involves general developmental screening during well-child checkups with a pediatrician or an early childhood health care provider. Children who show some developmental problems are referred for additional evaluation.
The most reliable and accurate test for diagnosing autism is a comprehensive assessment from a qualified mental health professional. This includes an evaluation of physical, psychological, and developmental factors that can help to identify signs of autism.
Generally, two main tests are used to diagnose autism, but not everyone agrees on whether these tests are the right ones. These tests are the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R).
The 2 tests that are considered the gold-standard for diagnosing ASD include the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised.
Commonly a multidisciplinary team will include a paediatrician (or child and adolescent psychiatrist), a psychologist and a speech pathologist, but other health professionals may provide input if required. A single health professional may be able to diagnose a child with obvious signs of autism.
Many children show symptoms of autism by 12 months to 18 months of age or earlier.
Signs of autism in young children include: not responding to their name. avoiding eye contact. not smiling when you smile at them.

What to expect during your child's autism evaluation. Your child will be evaluated by either a developmental pediatrician, a psychologist or with a team of professionals. Evaluations can range from one-and-a-half hours to four hours or longer, and may be done in one day or over a few visits.
Although the exact cause of autism is still unknown, there is evidence to suggest that genetics play a significant role. Since autism is less prevalent in females, autism was always thought to be passed down from the mother. However, research suggests that autism genes are usually inherited from the father.
There are other brain disorders that mimic autism symptoms, like ADHD and anxiety disorders, including selective mutism. Autism can be misdiagnosed as another disorder with some shared symptoms.
In fact, research has shown that autism symptoms tend to peak around the ages of 2-3 years old. During this time, children with autism may struggle with language development, social interaction, and behavior. They may have difficulty communicating their needs and understanding the needs of others.
Autism is not an illness
It means your brain works in a different way from other people. It's something you're born with. Signs of autism might be noticed when you're very young, or not until you're older. If you're autistic, you're autistic your whole life.
The Diagnostic Process
It is advisable to go to your GP armed with as much information as possible so make a list of everything which causes concern or that you have observed. Your GP will make a referral to a diagnostic team to assess your child.
Diagnosis may also bring with it better financial and practical support. For some this may mean access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Others may qualify for specialised mental health services or supports in the workplace or while studying at university or TAFE. This opens in a new window.

“High-functioning autism” isn't an official medical term or diagnosis. It's an informal one some people use when they talk about people with autism spectrum disorder , or ASD, who can speak, read, write, and handle basic life skills like eating and getting dressed.
Although 2019 research suggests some symptoms of ADHD and ASD overlap, there are distinct differences. A person with ADHD may have attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity challenges. But an autistic individual may have difficulties with communication, social interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviors.
A child with level 1 autism may understand and speak in complete sentences, but have difficulty engaging in back-and-forth conversation. Children with ASD level 1 experience some inflexibility of behavior, like difficulty switching between tasks, staying organized, and planning.
ASD Level 1 – Level 1 ASD is currently the lowest classification.
