Stage One: Autolysis
The first stage of human decomposition is called autolysis, or self-digestion, and begins immediately after death. As soon as blood circulation and respiration stop, the body has no way of getting oxygen or removing wastes.
The first stage is pallor mortis, where the skin pales due to blood pooling. The second stage is algor mortis, where the body cools over time. The third stage is rigor mortis, where muscles stiffen and contract. The fourth stage is livor mortis, where areas of pooled blood begin to take on a bruised-like discoloration.
Algor mortis is the second stage of decomposition of a body. It refers to the cooling of the body as it slowly becomes the ambient temperature of the room or area that it's located. Body temperature can be taken in the algor mortis stage to determine the time of death.
Postmortem lividity (livor mortis) is the settling of blood in the lowest part of the body due to gravity. This process immediately starts at the onset of death since the blood is no longer actively pumped through the body.
Livor mortis is the first stage of death. It takes between 20 and 30 minutes for livor mortis to set in.
In summary, Kubler-Ross and colleagues developed a five stage model of death and dying. These stages have different emotional responses that people go through in response to the knowledge of death. They are commonly referred to by an acronym of DABDA and are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.
There are five manners of death (natural, accident, suicide, homicide, and undetermined).
A corpse generally progresses through five stages of decomposition—fresh, bloat (autolysis), active decay (putrefaction), advanced decay and skeletonisation.
They might close their eyes frequently or they might be half-open. Facial muscles may relax and the jaw can drop. Skin can become very pale. Breathing can alternate between loud rasping breaths and quiet breathing.
How Long Does the Active Stage of Dying Last? The active stage of dying generally only lasts for about 3 days. The active stage is preceded by an approximately 3-week period of the pre-active dying stage.
What Happens One Hour After Death? At the moment of death, all of the muscles in the body relax (primary flaccidity ). The eyelids lose their tension, the pupils dilate, the jaw may fall open, and the joints and limbs are flexible.

There are two types of death that can be declared: Heart/respiratory death and brain death. The first type of death means an irreversible stopping of heart and lung function, whereas brain death means an irreversible stopping of brain function.
In virtually every case death may be sufficiently determined by what I shall call the 'death criteria trifecta' of cardiopulmonary, total brain, and higher brain criteria.

Putrefaction (4-10 days after death) – Autolysis occurs and gases (odor) and discoloration starts.
Livor mortis is the gravitational settling of blood which is no longer being pumped through the body after death, causing a bluish-purple discoloration of the skin. It is one of the post-mortem signs of death, along with pallor mortis, algor mortis, and rigor mortis.
Livor mortis, also known as lividity or hypostasis, is the gravitational pooling of blood to lower dependant areas resulting in a red/purple coloration. Although livor mortis is commonly seen between 2 and 4 h postmortem, its onset may begin in the 'early' period, as little as 30 min postmortem.
Terminal respiratory secretions, commonly known as a “death rattle,” occur when mucous and saliva build up in the patient's throat. As the patient becomes weaker and/or loses consciousness, they can lose the ability to clear their throat or swallow.
Purge fluid is decomposition fluid that may exude from the oral and nasal passages as well as other body cavities (see the image below). Postmortem purge fluid exudes from the oral and nasal passages; no traumatic injuries were uncovered at autopsy.
