The Mahdi army used two types of flags to indicate the position of their leaders. The main flag was in green and used to show the position and presence of the Mahdi. The second type, one of which illustrated here, was used by his emirs (commanders) and was of plain cotton decorated with appliqué Qur`anic texts.
The hadith of black flags (Arabic: أحاديث الرايات السود) is a motif featured in Islamic apocalyptics, about people carrying black banners. These hadith were used by some to justify following the Abbasid Revolution. Many Islamist and some jihadistic groups identify themselves with black banners bearing a white shahada.

Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Mahdī (Arabic: محمد بن الحسن المهدي) is believed by the Twelver Shia to be the last of the Twelve Imams and the eschatological Mahdi, who will emerge in the end of time to establish peace and justice and redeem Islam.

The concept of the Mahdi is a central tenet of Shi'a theology, but many Sunni Muslims also believe in the coming of a Mahdi, or rightly guided one, at the end of time to spread justice and peace. He will also be called Muhammad and be a descendant of the Prophet in the line of his daughter Fatima (Ali's wife).
