The most popular pet snake breeds are generally pretty relaxed as pets. They can range in sociability, but they're usually happy to just hang out in their tank, and respond pretty well to being handled, as long as you start them young.
Ball Python
They are typically brown with lighter patches, but captive-bred Ball Pythons come in a variety of colors. Adults are usually about 3.5-5 feet in length and can live 20-30 years. Ball Pythons are docile creatures and are reluctant to bite. They prefer to curl up in a ball when they feel threatened.
Species such as corn snakes, ball pythons, rosy boas and California king snakes are usually gentle and make great pets that are not known to bite. Alternatively, reticulated pythons and black racer snakes are generally more aggressive and can be more prone to biting when threatened.

They come in a variety of morphs, are fairly easy to find for sale, and their prices stay very reasonable. Gopher snake pricing starts at around $50. You can find them cheaper at local reptile shows. The gopher snake grows to about 3 to 6 feet in length, with an average length of 4 to 5 feet.
