Denim is measured by how many ounces are in a square yard of fabric. While there are no official standardized designations, usually lightweight denim is 5-12oz, mid-weight is 12-16oz, over 16oz is considered heavyweight. Many people consider 13-16oz mid-heavy-weight.

A Heavier Fabric
Quality jeans are made from a stronger, heavier weight of denim. They should not only look luxurious but feel luxurious, too. So get your hands on the fabric when shopping. Generally speaking, apart from summer jeans, lightweight denim (i.e. anything below 12-ounces) may equate to a lower quality.

In the standard measures, 30 to 150 GSM is lightweight. A measure of 150 to 350 GSM is medium weight and more than 350 GSM is heavyweight. The standard weight for T-shirts is 180 GSM, but some T-shirts may fall into the 130 -150 GSM range. Thread Count vs Fabric GSM: Thread count is not the same as the fabric GSM.
Denim weighing between 10.5 oz. and 12.5 oz. per square yard of fabric. Most Levi's® styles are crafted from midweight denim.
300 to 400 GSM: Lightweight, thinner, coarser. 400 to 600 GSM: Medium to higher weight, soft and absorbent, good for bath or beach towels. 700 to 900 GSM: Highest, heavy weight, soft and absorbent, high-priced, a luxury towel.
10oz = 338 gms
According to the Levi's denim dictionary, 10oz is still considered a lightweight denim, suitible for warmer weather styles but will be more durable than the lighter lightweights.
The 12.5-ounce denim is appropriate for a range of seasons and the jean comes in a variety of washes to suit your personal taste.
12oz – 20oz heavy weight denim
This is the type of denim that can pretty much stand up on its own. It's really thick and sturdy and very hard wearing.
1kg of laundry is equal to two bath towels OR one shirt and one pair of jeans or 5 shirts.
WHAT DOES A KILO OF CLOTHES LOOK LIKE? Well, different types of clothes will weigh different amounts, but very roughly it's about 4 dresses or a thick jumper and blouse with a pair of jeans.
Normally one upper garment like a T-shirt/shirt weighs around 150-170 grams. How many clothes is 20kg? Take 3 pairs of jeans, 4 or 5 tops, a sweatshirt/jacket, 2 pairs of PJ's are enough.

350-450 gsm – The highest GSM paper is pretty much cardstock. This is the stiffest, sturdiest paper and is used for business cards and invitations.
350 – 450 GSM paper: The heaviest and most rigid card which will easily stand under its own weight, and so much gets used most commonly for business cards and invitations.
3. Go heavyweight. The reason denimheads fetishize the weight of their denim is because the higher the count, the longer the wear and the better the fades. So, if you really want to put your jeans through the ringer, go heavyweight (anything above 16oz).
Lightweight denim is anything from 10 to 13 ounces, medium-weight is 14 to 18 ounces, and heavyweight is 19 ounces and up, according to Babzani. And each has their own benefits.
12–16 oz. = midweight. Above 16 oz. = heavyweight.
