Conventionally, the ideal chin is thought to be one that extends to just behind a vertical plane dropped from the vermilion border of the lower lip in the profile view (1–3) (Figure 1A). A chin that fails to do so is considered to be deficient, requiring augmentation.
Dr Julian De Silva said: 'This slightly V-shaped or heart-shaped chin is the most desirable. You can see its shape very clearly in Scarlett Johansson's beautiful face. ' This type of chin is also considered to be beautiful and striking.
Conclusions: Facial profile with a normal (3:53 ratio) or small (4:61 ratio) nose and chin protrusion/retrusion by 2 mm (pogonion-vertical line) is considered attractive.
Research has shown that chiseled jaws and strong chins appear more masculine and are considered universally attractive. But a new study challenges the idea of universally attractive features -- and finds that there is no one chin that is sexier than others.
Ideally this line should be straight, and your chin should project as far forward as your forehead and lips. However, if your chin does not align with your forehead, you have what doctors call a “weak” or receding chin.
Chin tucks are typically one of the key exercises recommended for keeping the head aligned above the spine, rather than drifting forward into poor posture. When done regularly and with proper form, chin tucks can help improve the neck's strength, flexibility, and function.
The chin is the forward pointed part of the anterior mandible (mental region) below the lower lip. A fully developed human skull has a chin of between 0.7 cm and 1.1 cm.
Still others have found that a mixture of mature features (large lower jaw, prominent cheekbones, and thick eyebrows) and neotenous features (large eyes and small nose) is the most desirable configuration of male faces (Cunningham, Barbee, & Pike, 1990).
Symmetry: people whose faces are more symmetrical are generally considered more attractive. Averageness: faces that resemble others in the population tend to appear more attractive. Apparent health: people who look healthy, because of their skin and overall appearance are considered to have more attractive faces.
Square Face Shape
The angle of the jaw is sharp rather than rounded. This is the most classically masculine face shape.
Diamond Face Shape
A pointy chin and high cheekbones define this face shape. Diamond-shaped faces also typically have a narrow forehead.
- Many factors such as ancestry, sex, eye/hair color as well as distinctive facial features (such as, shape of the chin, cheeks, eyes, forehead, lips, and nose) can be identified or estimated using an individual's genetic data, with potential applications in healthcare and forensics.
"The chin stands for your level of will power, your stubbornness, your tenacity," says Haner. "The more prominent the chin, like Kristen Stewart's, the more stubborn you'll be, but you'll also have the ability to withstand tough times.
Male versus Female Jaw
The angles of a man's jaw are sharp, giving it the appearance of a square, whereas a female's square jaw is still rounded. The chin on a man's face is flat at the base, and a female chin is pointed. A man's jaw appears wider, heavier, and thicker than a woman's.
Males usually have longer chins than females. There often is a sharp angle in between a male's jaw and chin, providing the chin a square appearance. Male chins usually have a flat base, whereas female chins are more pointed. Males have heavier, wider jaws than females.
But the heart shape, otherwise more commonly known as a V-shaped face, has been scientifically proven to be the most visually attractive face shape to have. Heart-shaped faces like those of Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon are deemed as 'mathematically beautiful'.
It says that women are most attracted to male faces that combine the best elements of both these extremes--the large eyes and medium-to-small nose of the baby's face with the strong jaw and wide cheekbones of the mature man's face.
Your grandmother's adage turns out be true, after all: The first thing people notice about you is your smile. A survey for USA Today by Philips Sonicare found that 47% of respondents chose a great smile as the feature that most attracted them. Second was eyes, with 31%.
As fat drifts down from the rest of your face and gathers under your chin and along your jaw, there's less collagen and elastin to keep the skin taut. At the same time, the neck muscles begin to sag and drag the skin down with it. The result: double chins and jowling.
With age, that fat loses volume, clumps up, and shifts downward, so features that were formerly round may sink, and skin that was smooth and tight gets loose and sags. Meanwhile other parts of the face gain fat, particularly the lower half, so we tend to get baggy around the chin and jowly in the neck.
A visually balanced face is approximately 1.618 times longer than it is wide. The distance from the top of the nose to the center of the lips should be around 1.618 times the distance from the center of the lips to the chin.
In a seated position, your chin should be parallel to the floor, with your shoulders, hips and knees even, and your knees and feet pointing forward. Having good posture not only contributes to a good appearance, but it has many health benefits, including: Encourages proper alignment of joints and bones.
