Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy treats the source of BPH — your enlarged prostate. This short, in-office procedure uses the natural energy stored in a few drops of water to shrink the prostate. So urine can flow freely.
Conclusions: Dutasteride improves urinary symptoms and flow rate and reduces prostate volume. In Japanese men with BPH, it is effective and generally well tolerated during the one-year treatment period.
When medication and other nonsurgical treatments aren't able to effectively reduce the symptoms of BPH, Rezum can make a significant difference in a patient's quality of life, Dr. Goldberg says. He adds that after having the procedure done, more than 90 percent of his patients have been able to get off medication.
Water vapor thermal therapy (WVTT) involves using a special steam-creating device to reduce the size of the prostate. The hot steam travels through a tube in the urethra and damages excess prostate tissue. Over time, the body reabsorbs this tissue.
Washington, IN (March 7, 2023) – Daviess Community Hospital Urology clinic is now using the iTind procedure to treat the symptoms of enlarged prostate. The iTind received FDA de Novo classification as a novel device for the minimally invasive treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in February 2020.
Potential risks associated with Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy include, but are not limited to: painful or frequent urination. blood in the urine or semen. decrease in ejaculatory volume.
Rezūm is recommended for men with a prostate volume of ≥ 30cm3 and ≤80cm3. Rezūm can also be recommended to men with chronic medical conditions, and of advanced age, as an alternative to other more invasive BPH surgeries. Rezūm is not recommended for patients with a urinary implant or who have a penile prosthesis.
Most patients report relatively minor discomfort during the procedure. Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy can be performed under oral sedation or local anesthesia and doesn't require general anesthesia. Your urologist will discuss your options for maximizing your comfort during the procedure.
Rezum is not covered by Medicare or Private Health Insurance, so Rezum is a self funded procedure.
At Brisbane Urology Clinic, our urologists offer a number of different surgical options for the treatment of benign prostate enlargement, including Rezūm.
Rezūm™ Therapy
Proven prostate volume reduction, long-term durability and preservation of sexual function at 5 years.
Sometimes the reason may be simply inadequate treatment but other times symptoms may be caused by a different problem such as the overactive bladder, bladder stones, bladder cancer, or urethral stricture.
Catheterization as a Part of Rezūm Therapy
“For Rezūm Therapy patients, a catheter is usually left in post-procedure because patients will likely have an inflammatory response to the procedure and swelling may make it difficult or impossible for them to urinate,” said Dr. Bilal Chughtai.
How it works: Rezūm™ Water Vapor Therapy. Rezūm Therapy is typically performed right in your urologist's office, or at an outpatient surgery facility and completed in one short appointment. During each 9-second treatment, sterile water vapor is released throughout the targeted prostate tissue.
Supplementary Materials p. 3 6th paragraph: "The human prostate has a weight that increases with age: 28.2 g in 40-49 year old individuals, 30.8 g in 50-59 year old individuals, 35 g in 60-70 year old individuals (primary source 43), and 46.2 g in those older than 75 years (primary source 44)."
Pros Rezum Procedure
Many BPH treatments can impact ejaculation and Rezum prevents ejaculation issues in 97% of cases. Rezum doesn't require general anesthesia and is considered a top alternative to surgery or medications. Rezum therapy preserves sexual and urinary functions, showing results in two weeks.
The procedure takes in total between 20-25 minutes. In comparison with other treatments, which have a longer recovery period, you should be able to resume normal activities within a few days. You should notice improvements within three weeks, although it may take up to six months to obtain the full effect.
Rezum™ Water Vapor Therapy is a minimally invasive surgical treatment that uses convective water vapor thermal energy to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Although Rezum is attractive for these reasons, it is currently only recommended for prostates < 80 cc (i.e., small prostates, SP), whereas the suggested treatment options for prostate glands ≥ 80 cc (i.e., large prostates, LP) include laser enucleation procedures or simple prostatectomy [14].
Transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) is considered as the gold standard surgical treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).
5-Alpha-Reductase Inhibitors
In some men, finasteride can relieve BPH symptoms, increase urinary flow rate and shrink the prostate, though it must be used indefinitely to prevent recurrence of symptoms, and it may take as long as six months to achieve maximum benefits.
5-alpha reductase inhibitors are used to treat larger prostate glands. They shrink the prostate gland if it's enlarged. Finasteride and dutasteride are the two 5-alpha reductase inhibitors available.
