Make your bed the 'kitchen sink' and always make it up before your leave the room and don't leave clothes or laundry to be folded on it. Apply it to your desk at work. Choose one area of your home or work and master it – then move on to other areas that will improve your living space and yourself.
Sinks come in all shapes and sizes. For a double sink allow for a length of around 800mm and a width of 480mm plus a drainage area on the benchtop. The depth of the sink is around 200mm. If you wish to plan your kitchen sink with a single bowl allow for a length of 550mm and a width of around 500mm.
According to the kitchen triangle rule, each side of the triangle should measure no less than four feet and no more than nine feet and, ideally, the perimeter of the triangle should be no less than 13 feet and no more than 26 feet.
When planning, you must also consider the distance you allocate around your cooktop. Australian standards state that there needs to be a 50mm clearance to non-combustible surfaces (heat rated splashbacks) or a 200mm clearance to combustible surfaces.
Guidelines recommend including at least a 24” wide landing area to one side of the sink, and at least an 18” wide landing area on the other side.
Keep in mind that you can put the sink anywhere you want, but changing the plumbing will affect your budget. 2. What appliances does it need to be near? Another practical issue is where the sink should be located vis-à-vis other appliances or work spaces.
Generally, the sink, main refrigerator, and stove need to be near each other, allowing easy access for food preparation. Allow minimum 4 and maximum 9 feet between each point to easily maneuver. The dishwasher is best located near the sink so you have less distance to travel with dirty dishes.
These measurements allow for your legs to fit comfortably beneath the benchtop while seated and also mean your stools can be stored under the benchtop when not in use. If you are planning to have your sink or stovetop located in your island bench, ensure they are positioned a minimum of 300 millimetres from the edge.
The ideal distance between the stove and sink (or any two points in the triangle) is between 4 and 9 feet. If properly distanced, it should give your work area enough space for you to move around and easily maneuver without bumping into everyone else.
Work surfaces
For safety and efficiency, allow adequate bench space for preparation (80-140cem between sink and hotplates, 30cm at each side of the cooktop) and serving (300mm for two plates, double for four), and at least 450mm set down next to the fridge, pantry and wall oven. The recommended counter depth is 600mm.
The simple reason why kitchen sinks have traditionally been placed under the window is that the window is, obviously, on an outside wall. In terms of plumbing, using as short a waste pipe as possible from the sink to the drains is not only the most effective but also the cheapest, solution.
In terms of convenience and efficiency, this would mean that the dishwasher should be located on the left for a right-handed person. If you are left-handed, the dishwasher should be placed on the right.
Although for tiny kitchens, experts recommend a length of at least 56 to 69 centimetres. In terms of depth, kitchen sinks should be at least 17.8 to 18.4 centimetres deep – if they aren't, your dishes will pile up quickly and reach the faucet – 20.3 centimetres and up would be ideal for heavy dish loads.
22×30” or 22×33” used to be standard measurements. However, there are not really standard sink sizes anymore due to the variety now available. However, as a general guide, an optimal range for a single bowl sink is: Length of 70cm to 77cm.
Bathroom Sink Distance From the Wall
Place bathroom sinks 20 inches from the back wall, recommended. The bare minimum is 15 inches. This is measured from the sink's center point to the wall. Bathroom vanities with precut sinks should already meet the spacing guidelines.
As a general rule of thumb, you will want at least a 1/2" of clearance on both sides between the lip of the sink and the inside walls of the cabinet (1/4" is tight, but doable!).
If they are too close, heat from the stove can make the fridge work harder, making it less energy efficient. Additionally, it can also cause the food in the fridge to spoil faster. The recommended minimum distance between a refrigerator and a stove is 20 inches.
According to Australian regulations, the minimum clearance between a gas cooktop element or burner component is: 600mm of vertical clearance to a combustible surface, and 200mm of horizontal distance to a vertical surface.
Sinks. A minimum clear floor space of 30×48 inches should be provided in front of the lav. Up to 19 inches of the 48-inch floor space can extend under the lav when a knee space is provided. The minimum clear space from the centerline of the lav to any side wall is 15 inches.
The least amount of space that should exist between the countertop and upper kitchen cabinets is 18 inches, but it may even go up to 20-22 inches. But if you are someone of a shorter height, then you may consider bringing them down a bit to be able to successfully access the top shelves of the upper cabinets.
Feel free to experiment with your layout as long the refrigerator placement meets these basic requirements: (1) Leave ½” of space on all side and the top for ventilation; (2) Leave 2 ½” minimum clearance if installed next to a wall; (3) Do not install next to a stove or other heat source; (4) Install near an outlet or ...
The U-Shape design is the most versatile layout for both large and small kitchens. It provides storage and countertop space on three walls, which creates an efficient work triangle for food prep.
Utilizing the space
If you do most of your cooking on the weekends, for example, you may want to place your oven in a central location so that it's easily accessible from all parts of the kitchen. If you're a weekday cook, on the other hand, you may prefer to have your oven closer to the sink and countertops.
Most sink manufacturers provide a template. Position the template so it is centered on the sink cabinet and is at least 1 1/2 inches back from the countertop's front edge. If your countertop is deeper than 24 inches, place it farther back, but not more than 4 inches.
