Australia's largest wind farm will soon be under construction in the Golden Plains Shire just 60 kilometres north-west of Geelong. The wind farm is a landmark project supporting Victoria's transition to a clean energy future.
'The MacIntyre Wind Farm brings unprecedented scale to Australia's renewable energy generation capacity, offering a significant leap forward for our energy transition,' said lead Partner and Head of Project Finance, Michael Ryan.
With 140 x 3 MW turbines, it's currently the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
Inland regions of Western Australia, South Australia and western Victoria all have good wind resources.
Jaisalmer Wind Park – India
The Jaisalmer Wind Park, located in the Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan, in Western India, is the second-largest wind farm in India, with a capacity of 1,064MW.
“Rye Park is a landmark project in NSW,” says Tom Villiers, the head of delivery for Tilt Renewables. “This is a fantastic milestone for the project, the culmination of lot of hard work by the team and our delivery partners – Zenviron, Vestas and Lumea, overcoming exceptional wet weather and setbacks through 2022.
AGL Energy
AGL operates some of the largest wind farms in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Salmon Beach Wind Farm near Esperance was the first wind farm in Australia, with six turbines that operated for nearly 15 years.

That's enough to power around 20,000 European households and save more than 38,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of removing 25,000 passenger cars from the road annually. The world's most powerful wind turbine will makes its debut next year at Denmark's Frederikshavn wind farm.
The V150-4.2MW wind turbines, supplied and installed by Vestas and carried by AAL, are said to be the tallest installed in Australia, at nearly 250 metres from base to tip.
The Gansu Wind Farm in China is the largest wind farm in the world, with a target capacity of 20,000 MW by 2020. The Shepherds Flat Wind Farm is an 845 megawatt (MW) wind farm in the U.S. state of Oregon.
The Roscoe Wind Farm near Roscoe, Texas is one of the world's largest-capacity wind farms. With 627 wind turbines and a total installed capacity of 781.5 MW, owned and operated by RWE.
Australia has 50 offshore wind farm projects of which none currently operating, none where construction has progressed enough to connect the turbines and generate electricity, none are in the build phase, and none are either consented or have applied for consent.
This energy type is one of Australia's main sources of renewable energy, generating enough electricity to meet 7.1 per cent of the nation's total electricity demand. At the end of 2018, there were 94 wind farms in Australia, delivering nearly 16 GW of wind generation capacity.
The Australian Government does not currently have a target for offshore wind energy. Any and all offshore wind projects in Australia require several important assessments and proposals, including a management plan, before they can be granted a commercial licence.
The projects. Dogger Bank Wind Farm is an offshore wind farm being developed in three phases – Dogger Bank A, B and C – located between 130km and 190km from the North East coast of England at their nearest points.
A good quality, modern wind turbine will generally last for 20 years, although this can be extended to 25 years or longer depending on environmental factors and the correct maintenance procedures being followed.
At full capacity, one wind turbine can generate 48 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy per day.
1: Jiuquan Wind Power Base/Gansu Wind Farm, China
Since the first 5.16 GW phase of the Jiuquan Wind Power Base was completed in November 2010, the wind farm, which is also referred to as Gansu Wind Farm, has comfortably held the spot as the world's largest wind farm.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has today visited Australia's largest solar farm, located in Queensland's Western Downs region, to mark the end of construction on the mega project.
Situated roughly 89 kilometers (approximately 55 miles) off the coast of Yorkshire, England, the scale of Hornsea 2 is considerable. According to Orsted, it has a capacity of more than 1.3 gigawatts and stretches across an area of 462 square kilometers — more than half the size of New York City.
As of 2022, Hornsea 2 in the United Kingdom is the largest offshore wind farm in the world at 1,386 MW.
Big Zero Show 2023
China has unveiled what is described as the world's largest offshore wind turbine. The 18MW wind turbine, developed by CSSC Haizhuang, is built at Shandong Province Dongying City Offshore Wind Power Industrial Park.
