Chapter 2: The Journey
This brief chapter describes Eddie's journey to heaven. Eddie is floating and he does not feel any pain. He remembers lunging toward the little girl but he is not sure if he saved her or not. The end of this chapter brings us back to Eddie's fifth birthday at Ruby Pier.
Where does Eddie wake up? How is it different from what he remembered at the end of his life? Eddie wakes up in a large teacup, and he is at Ruby Pier, but the Ruby Pier is designed like it was when he was a child (he also couldn't feel pain and couldn't speak).
The people Eddie meets are- the Blue Man, the Captain, Ruby, his wife Marguerite, and Tala(read the book to know their stories). Surprisingly, out of all these five people, it is Tala- a young girl, who Eddie meets for the first time(in heaven, no less!), who had the most profound impact on him.
WHAT WAS THE LAST LESSON EDDIE LEARNED? TALA TAUGHT EDDIE THAT HE DID SAVE THE LITTLE GIRL. SHE ALSO TOLD HIM HOW HIS LIFE HAD MUCH IMPORTANCE, HE KEPT CHILDREN LIKE HER SAFE.
The Captain confesses that he shot Eddie in the leg to prevent Eddie from chasing the shadow into the fire. This saved Eddie's life despite leaving him with a lifelong severe limp. Eddie then learns how the Captain died: he stepped on a land mine that would have killed all the men had he not set it off.
Though Eddie manages to occupy the Demobats until the battle is over, he succumbs to his wounds. He dies in Dustin's arms in the Upside Down, and his body is never recovered. Days later, Dustin tells Eddie's uncle that he died a hero, fighting for the town despite the fact that everyone in it wrongly hated him.
Eddie, played by Joseph Quinn, sacrificed himself to save Hawkins – but the brutal irony of his sacrifice was that the residents of Hawkins believed him to be a murderer, and made his life a nightmare in the run-up to his death.
The fifth person Eddie meets in Heaven is a young girl name Tala. Eddie accidentally caused her death during the war. Tala, the fifth person Eddie meets in Heaven, helps him make peace with himself and his life.
During the fifth lesson, Tala tells Eddie that his life did have a purpose: he was meant to work at Ruby Pier and keep the children safe.
He died from a heart attack, caused by the shock from a young Eddie running into the street after a lost ball on his birthday. The Blue Man teaches Eddie that all lives are connected, even strangers.
The kicker of it all? Eddie's final words to Dustin: "I love you, man." If those words weren't already bringing on the waterworks, Dustin tearfully replies "I love you, too." And then Eddie is gone. The impact of those words in that moment could not have been more perfectly heartbreaking.
Ruby says that Eddie's father in The Five People You Meet in Heaven was hard on him, but asks Eddie to consider if he was hard on his father, as well. Eddie feels anger growing inside him. His father tried to hit him. His father's last words to him were “get a job.” He tells Ruby that she didn't even know his father.
Eddie saves the little girl - We find out at the end of the novel that Eddie did save the little girl from the falling amusement cart. It is important to note the symbolism of this child's rescue.
The idea is that Eddie could not have died from the bites of demo-bats alone, so, instead, he is transformed into another creature based on D&D characters. According to this theory, Eddie will be turned into Kas, a vampire creature who wields a spiky shield, similar to Eddie's spike-covered trash-can lid.
Despite thousands of fans recently signing a petition to get the show's creators to bring back character Eddie Munson following his untimely death in the latest season, the creators have officially ruled out the possibility of Eddie ever making a return to the beloved sci-fi drama.
As Eddie takes his final breaths, the pair declare their love for one another. However, this expressed love is likely to be kinship and bromance rather than anything romantic. After all, it was Dustin who helped Eddie when others in Hawkins were suspecting his involvement in Chrissy's death.
In heaven, Ruby tells Eddie the true story of how his father died saving Mickey, and teaches him the lesson of forgiveness.
Eddie thinks about this, and forgives the Captain for shooting his leg. Just as the Blue Man's death spared Eddie's life, so too did the Captain's sacrifice prevent the possible deaths of his men—creating an important connection between the giver and the recipient of a sacrifice.
Finally, Eddie asks Tala if he was able to save the young girl at Ruby Pier before his death. Tala says he was able to push her out of the way of the falling car. Eddie is confused because he felt the girl's small hands in his before he died. But Tala tells him that those were her hands pulling him into heaven.
He feels a sense of peace as he floats above the boardwalk. He then comes to the big Ferris wheel, where Marguerite is sitting and waiting for him. Eddie hears the voice of God say: “Home.”
Eddie made his sacrifice when he took over his father's job at the Pier and moved into his parents' building to keep an eye on his mother after his father died.
Although Mickey was a drunk and touching Eddie's mother, Eddie's father knew he had to save his friend and to preserve the loyalty in their friendship.
