1) Mosquito's: Itchy bites, annoying buzzing sounds, and they carry diseases. 2) Fleas: Tough to handle
Mosquitoes
It's no surprise that mosquitoes were voted the most hated insect by 12.2% of participants. They were also voted the least popular insect in four states. Mosquitoes can cause numerous problems, from spoiling a backyard barbecue to spreading dangerous diseases like West Nile virus.
You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone in the world who likes cockroaches, and for good reason: they're very hard to get rid of and they are easily the grossest bug on our list. Roaches thrive in filthy living conditions, so a grimy house is like an open invitation.
Rats. As the largest single group of mammals on Earth, rats damage buildings by making nests out of insulation, chewing electrical wires and causing fires. In the Middle Ages, millions of Europeans died after being bitten by rodent fleas carrying the plague bacterium.
Feral Cats
Today, they are decimating native wildlife. It's estimated there are up to 6.3 million feral cats prowling Australia. Each year they will kill 456 million native mammals, 446 million reptiles, 272 million birds and 92 million frogs.
Australia's Largest Insect:
Ctenamorpha species of stick insect found in the wet tropics. An overall body length measuring up to 50 cms.
It might be difficult to believe, but the cockroach might be the “cleanest” species of insect.
1. Mosquito. The deadliest insect is, in fact, the deadliest critter in the entire animal kingdom. It is the humble mosquito, which kills more than 700,000 people every year.
The Lord Howe Island Phasmid or Land Lobster, Dryococelus australis, may be the rarest insect in the world and is possibly also the rarest invertebrate. Once abundant on Lord Howe Island, it was thought to have been extinct after a shipwreck introduced rats to the island in 1918.
A few insects, such as mayflies and some moths, never eat. That's because their lives are over in just a few hours or days. Once these insects become adults, they lay eggs, and then die.
It's hard to pinpoint what exactly it is about cockroaches that bothers people so much, simply because there are so many answers. “They're erratic; it's like they're doing eight things at once; they look dirty; they move really fast; they seem to have no fear of people,” Stein rattles off.
The island country of Japan, however, is home to numerous forms of dangerous and even deadly forms of insect life. Considering Japan's relatively small size along with the multitude of native insect pests, this country can be considered one of the most insect pest-populated countries in the world.
Negative attitudes towards insects manifest as the emotion disgust, which is regarded as a psychological adaptation to produce pathogen-avoidance behavior.
Habitat. Virtually all terrestrial habitats in Australia have native cockroaches present, including some caves which are host to specialised pale blind and wingless species of cockoaches. There are no aquatic species known.
When it comes to germs, both of these pests carry plenty around. However, flies tend to have twice as many germs as cockroaches, which makes them an even bigger health hazard at dining establishments.
Many people instinctively want to kill stink bugs by squishing them. However, when disturbed or crushed, stink bugs tend to release a bad-smelling, bad-tasting odor from pores on the sides of their bodies. This is how the pest earned its name.
The diabolical ironclad beetle is one tough critter, as its name might suggest. Equipped with super-tough body armour, the insect can survive being stamped on or even run over by a car. Now scientists have investigated the secrets of how the beetle can withstand forces up to 39,000 times its body weight.
Scientific name: Staphylinus olens. A ferocious and fast predator, the Devil's coach horse beetle hunts invertebrates after dark in gardens and on grasslands. It is well-known for curling up its abdomen like the tail of a scorpion when defending itself.
Microstructures in the beetle's armor make it nearly impossible to squish. The diabolical ironclad beetle looks sort of like a rock — and it's almost as unbreakable. Thanks to the intricate connections between different parts of the insect's exoskeleton, this hardy beetle can withstand getting run over by a car.
The combination of warm climates and moisture provides the perfect prerequisites for an abundance of food year-round. This constant access to nourishment has given many species of insects the ability to grow and flourish over years of development.
In Australia they are only found in the southeastern part of the country, from South Australia to Queensland via Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania. You won't find them in the dry and arid zones. On the other hand, huntsman and wolf-spiders are found all over the country.
Black Carpet Beetles are found throughout Australia. Carpet beetles are as common in food pantries as they are in a carpet or wardrobe. However, as the name suggests, Carpet Beetles are often prevalent in the carpet's pile but this is not their only habitat.
