The most desirable
Greens and Blues – Some of my personal favorites are navy blue, hunter green, turquoise, and sky blue. These colors look great on nearly any horse. Turquoise has become quite popular in western disciplines during recent years.
Bay is the most common color in most horse breeds; it's their base color. Bay horses typically have brown bodies and a black point coloration in their tail, mane, muzzles, lower legs, and rims around their ears.
Gray is common in many breeds. Today, about one horse in 10 carries the mutation for graying with age. The vast majority of Lipizzaners are gray, as are the majority of Andalusian horses. Many breeds of French draft horse such as the Percheron and Boulonnais are often gray as well.
The Queen's favourite horses: Betsy
We would have to start with Betsy, a 15.2hh black-brown mare that Her Majesty used to ride in the 1960s.
The colors you choose for feed bins, stall interiors, horse trailers and even indoor arenas also have an influence on your equine. For a particularly edgy or nervous horse, simply painting the inside of his stall a soothing green or blue will help calm him.
Researchers have found that horses react more to yellow, white, black, and blue floors, as compared to floors that are green, red, brown, or gray. Horses don't seem to mind these “less favorite” colors on walls rather than floors.
1) The most common color of Kentucky Derby winners is bay with 56, including Mandaloun in 2021, followed by chestnut with 49 winners, including Rich Strike last year, and brown with 17.
The Akhal-Teke horse is considered to be one of the most beautiful horse breeds in the world due to it's metallic-like shine to it's fur, giving this breed the appearance of golden and bronze statues almost. In Turkmenistan, this breed is the national horse breed and there is even known as 'the golden horse'.
The dominant white is one of the rarest horse colors on the planet. Horses with this color carry the “W” gene that causes them to be completely white. Few people can correctly identify a dominant white horse. They are easy to confuse with light grays, cremellos, and perlinos.
A Peacock Appaloosa is a specific type of Appaloosa coat pattern. Peacock Appaloosas have spots and speckles surrounded by a halo of hair in a contrasting fur color.
Khadi is a Perlino horse, an usual breed defined by their cream coats and pink skin and their blue or glass eyes. Because of this, they are sometimes called pseudo-albino horses. The cream colour can vary from a very pale off white to a pale coffee colour, but shines through pink under their short summer coats.
Akhal-Teke
Cream-colored horses may appear golden, while silver horses have more of a silvery glow. The Akhal-Teke breed is the fastest horse breed and exhibits extraordinary ability in long-distance competitions.
Wolves and mountain lions (also known as cougars or pumas) pose the biggest threat, but packs of coyotes, feral dogs, or even alligators have been known to attack young or injured horses. Still, if you live in an area where large predators are present, take precautions to protect your horses and other pets.
Horses have excellent memories and can remember certain people after long periods. A recent study completed in 2021 proved horses could recognize and understand human facial expressions and emotional responses. Extensive research has shown horses can maintain memories of humans when they have positive interactions.
In our experience and based on the views of property owners we have interacted with, there is no concrete evidence or science to prove that horse sees black better than white or vice versa. As far as horse safety and vision is concerned there is no difference in either shade.
Prey animals identify predators by smell and sight—including their view of eye position. One look at a human face, and the evolutionary equine brain knows we are predators. Because horses see us as natural predators, human eye contact has a warning effect.
Although horses have better sight than humans in the dark, they are not able to easily adjust from light that is bright to darker conditions of light. Horses may shy or spook if lighting is quickly changed and they are not given adequate time to adjust.
This means that horses see the world in a palette of blues and yellows and find it more difficult to detect subtle differences in natural colours.
Burmese (1962–1990), a black Police Service Horse (PSH) mare, was given to Queen Elizabeth II by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and ridden by the Queen for Trooping the Colour for 18 consecutive years, from 1969 to 1986.
The horses that will pull the Royal carriage between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace will be the famous Windsor Greys and this breed have been selected by the Royal Family for decades in carrying out this key task.
