The five most common elective surgeries older adults considered were joint surgery (18%), eye surgery (12%), abdominal surgery (10%), cosmetic surgery (9%), and foot or leg surgery (7%).
Some of the most common elective surgeries for seniors include: Hip Replacement Surgery: This procedure involves the removal of the painful hip joint with arthritis and replacing it with an artificial joint made from plastic and metal components.
An appendectomy is the most common surgery in the US when it comes to general surgery. These surgical procedures can be scheduled or done on an emergency basis, depending on the condition of the appendix.
Common Surgical Conditions
Common surgical diseases which need surgery in the elderly population are cholelithiasis, hernias - recurrent, incisional, inguinal and various cancers.
Most common indications for elective surgery in our study are hernias and gallstone disease. Early elective surgical intervention is preferred in elderly population when presented, as age, co morbidities and emergency settings increase risk of perioperative mortality.
The most common postoperative complications in the geriatric population include delirium, ileus, nutritional deficiencies, respiratory complications—including pulmonary embolism—and urinary retention. The goal in managing any elderly patient is to preserve cognitive and physical function.

Treatment for appendix cancer can be trying. The surgery has been nicknamed the MOAS (mother of all surgeries) as depending on how many cancer affected organs and tissues are removed, it can be the equivalent of several “major surgeries”. You can do a lot to help yourself recover from treatment.

The seriousness of surgery
Major surgery – such as surgery to the organs of the head, chest and abdomen. Examples of major surgery include organ transplant, removal of a brain tumour, removal of a damaged kidney or open-heart surgery. The person will need to stay in hospital for some time.
Typical discomforts may include: Nausea and vomiting from general anesthesia. Sore throat (caused by the tube placed in the windpipe for breathing during surgery) Soreness, pain, and swelling around the incision site.
The most common postoperative complications include fever, small lung blockages, infection, pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Some complications listed here are very serious but most people having surgery will not experience them.
