I absolutely love this show but for smaller kids with the blood and the vampires bitting necks and the wooden buckets I would not recommend for younger kids but I think 12 and up is a great age for this show it's very suspenseful and very good.

The series plays into the perennial popularity of vampires and all things otherworldly. That said, it's a lot edgier than Twilight, making it an iffy choice for younger teens. The violence is pretty graphic -- there are torture scenes, bloody wounds, and combat shown -- and romantic scenes can get pretty steamy.
Teenagers below 14 and especially children shouldn't watch this. The story and lore are very engaging but the show doesn't miss shocking scenes like torture, prolonged executions, being burnt alive and surgeries without anesthesia.
Incredible story, with lots of violence (Season 2 and season 3 finale especially), about 10 sex scenes where nothing is actually revealed, and a reasonable amount of swearing (Mostly S/B words). Overall a great show, perfect for teens, though probably too violent for kids.
Stefan loved Elena more than anyone else and was entirely devoted to her. They both wanted to pursue a human life, whereas Damon enjoyed being a vampire. Elena reunited with Damon in the series finale, but she would potentially have been a lot happier if she had chosen to be with Stefan instead.
Caroline is actually Stronger, but Elena was trained to kill vampires as a human. They both fought when Elena had her humanity off and she almost killed Caroline.
