Snakes are able to recognise and distinguish between humans and may recognise the scent of their owner as familiar or positive with time. However, snakes are unable to view humans as companions so cannot form a bond with their owner like other pets can.
Snakes do not typically like being pet, but some that become accustomed to being handled don't mind the human interaction. Snakes can definitely feel when you pet them but the sensation is not as desirable as it is for many domesticated animals.
However, snakes do not possess the intellectual capacity to feel affection for their owners. They may enjoy time with people, especially ones who are feeding them, but they simply aren't capable of forming a strong bond with you.
Royal pythons can become quite docile with careful handling. Gently scoop up the snake with one hand near the head and the other by its tail. Always support the whole snake and never grab them as it can cause stress which may lead to biting.
Corn Snake

Your Snake is Happy If…
He moves slowly when handled; snakes move quickly when stressed to avoid danger. If he is comfortable around you, he will be relaxed when picked up. Doesn't hyper-focus too often; snakes who feel threatened will focus on what is in front of them such as prey or predator.
While snakes have an extraordinary sense of smell, they cannot smell fear. They cannot comprehend someone's emotions, but they can interpret a person's or prey's body language. Fearful body language may be interpreted by the snake as aggression.
Some people may feel squirmy around snakes, but these reptiles offer company and stress relief for many people. Snakes are also low maintenance; they do not require daily walks and they are quiet during the day and at night.
