Boasting the coolest street in the world, Fitzroy is Melbourne's oldest suburb. Only 3km north-east of the Central Business District in the City of Yarra, it covers 100ha and is the smallest and most densely populated area outside the CBD.
Kilmore is reputedly Victoria's oldest inland town. Over the past 40 years, as a result of quick access to Melbourne via the Hume Freeway, it has seen the population increase dramatically as it has become a commuter area for the city.
The youngest suburbs are Parkville, Clayton North and Melbourne CBD – North, where the median age is 26. These areas are all home to a lot of students who attend nearby universities.

The largest populations live in the western suburbs and the NSW Central Coast. Among Sydney's local council areas, Penrith has the biggest Indigenous population, with 9500 people, or 4.8 per cent of the total identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.
Over 51% of the Victorian Aboriginal population live in one of fifteen local government areas. The Local Government Areas with the highest Aboriginal population are: Shepparton; Mildura; Geelong; Bendigo; Casey; East Gippsland; Darebin; Wyndham; Ballarat; Whittlesea; Latrobe; and Hume.
Toorak has long been one of Melbourne's most affluent suburbs, with wealthy entrepreneurs and athletes calling it home. According to Real Estate, some of its residents include the co-owner of Chadstone – the Fashion Capital and former Essendon Football Club chairman (and owner of Port Phillip Ferries) Paul Little.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics rankings, released on Thursday, are based on the latest Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA), compiled using data from the 2021 census. The list of the most advantaged suburbs is dominated by locations in Melbourne's inner east, such as Toorak, Brighton and Malvern.
Melbourne has some of the richest suburbs in the country and Toorak is considered the most expensive one. The median price for units and houses is highest in Toorak. The market average price for houses and units is higher in Toorak, East Melbourne, Main Ridge, Brighton, and Middle Park.
La Trobe's Cottage
This is Melbourne's oldest surviving building and the original home to Victoria's first governor and his family, Charles Joseph La Trobe, from 1839. Inside, La Trobe's Cottage is a living museum containing many original pieces of furniture and other artefacts belonging to the La Trobe family.
Toorak—an inner suburb in Melbourne, five kilometers southeast of Melbourne's Central Business District and known for its gated cul-de-sacs and wide, tree-lined streets—has been a private playground to the rich and famous since wealthy merchant James Jackson built an Italianate residence there in 1849.
Melbourne had many unofficial names in its first years, including Batmania, Barebrass, Bearport, Dutergalla, Bareheep and most popularly "the Settlement".

Dating back to 1837, Kilmore is believed to be Victoria's oldest inland settled town and is located in the Heart of Victoria. Situated near a gap in the Great Dividing Range, Kilmore is only 60km from Melbourne but offers all the luxuries of a small country town.
Marooned on a paved pavilion, Helmcken House in Thunderbird park, right outside the doors of the Royal BC museum, looks out of place. Officially the oldest house still standing, this heritage house has been preserved in its entirety and stands on the site that it was originally built.
The Patch is the safest suburb among Melbourne's suburbs with the lowest crime rate. However, the inner suburb, “The Patch” is relatively small. It is located 36 kilometres east of Melbourne's central business district in the county of Yarra Ranges. Furthermore, the suburb has a population of 1065 residents.

By sheer numbers, it is Mexico City and Peru's capital, Lima, that are the cities with the highest aboriginal populations. About 45% Peru's 31 million people identify as belonging to one of the country's 51 indigenous communities.
Victoria is built on the traditional territory of the Lekwungen People (pronounced Le-KWUNG-en). The Songhees and Esquimalt Nations are part of the Coast Salish family and are descendants of the Lekwungen family groups. Lekwungen is the original language of this land.
The Northern Territory has the highest proportion of Indigenous residents among its population – an estimated 32% (79,000 people) in 2022 (Figure 2).
