The average ring size for most women is between a size 5 and size 7. We also know that the average sized woman in the U.S. is about 5-feet 4-inches tall. You can go off these averages to determine her ring size without her knowing. If she's shorter or weighs a little more, you can go up a size or two.
If you see a little pudge of skin folding over the top of your ring (a phenomenon we so lovingly refer to as ring muffin top), your ring is probably too snug. You should be able to comfortably rotate your ring around your finger both clockwise and counterclockwise.

The vast majority of engagement rings will be in the range of 5.5 - 6.5. Of course it's not uncommon to be smaller than a 5.5 or larger than a 6.5, but almost all engagement ring orders in the US fall in this tight range.
The safest way to measure your ring finger at home is to match an existing ring against this printable chart. Place the ring over the circles. Match the inside edge of the ring to the circle nearest in size. This measurement refers to the inside diameter of the ring and then match the diameter to the chart.
