The peace symbol (☮) was designed by Gerald Holtom in 1958, displaying the letters N and D in flag semaphore, and is the official symbol of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
The symbol now known internationally as the "peace symbol" or "peace sign", or alternatively as the nuclear disarmament symbol, or the CND symbol (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) originates as a symbol representing the threat of nuclear annihilation used in British anti-nuclear activism from 1958.
The Peace Sign
Nixon famously used it also to mean “victory.” Though Nixon was a pro-war president in the 1960s and '70s, anti-war activists at the same time co-opted the “V” sign to identify themselves as peace-seekers.
