At 13.5 meters tall, 26.59 meters long and weighing in at over 2300tons, the Finnish-made Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C is the largest internal-combustion engine ever produced and pumps out a whopping 80.1MW (107,390hp). This colossal creation is responsible for powering one of the biggest container ships ever made.
The engine weighs 2,300 tons and stands 44 feet tall and 90 feet long - more than a four-story building. Redline is at 102 RPM, but the torque is enough to tear a tank to shreds.
This all became famous through a performance-passionate Chevy employee, Fred Gibb, who ordered a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro with the infamous, and truly gigantic, 427 cubic-inch V8, developed for the Can-Am Racing. This 7.0-Liter V8 was humbly rated at 435 HP, but it was reported to be capable of over 500 HP.
Rimac Nevera (1,914hp)
As far as prototypes go, the Devel Sixteen is one of the most extreme examples in existence. The public got its first glimpse of the car´s engine back in 2015. The maddening 5000 horsepower v16 engine which would go on to power one of the most outrageous supercars of all times vowed the audience.
Enter the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye. Just like the Charger Hellcat Redeye, power from the 6.2-liter, supercharged V-8 rose to 797 horsepower from the initial 707.
But, you may wonder what the 'V' means in V6 and V8. The 'V' represents the way cylinders are arranged in your engine. V-type engines have cylinders placed in a V-like shape, or to put it the other way, in two equal rows. This design is commonly used since it requires less space and can fit in most cars.
The Largest Engine in the World
The snappily-named Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C is designed by the Wärtsilä Corporation in Finland and made to power the world's biggest container ships.
This massive turbo belongs to one of the biggest and strongest engines in the world, the Wärtsilä RT-flex96C. The engine weighs nearly 2300 tonnes and has a length of 26.6m and a height of 13.5m. David Breeden and 2,749 others like this.
Gordon Murray Automotive's T. 50 is the fastest engine ever made and fitted into a production car.
One of the few -if not the only- V24 engines in current production is the Austrian-made Jenbacher J624 gas engine for electric power generation and CHP applications. The engine makes use of two-stage turbocharging, and with a bore and stroke of 190mm by 220mm, the total swept volume of the 24-cylinder engine is 149.7L.
A V16 engine is a sixteen-cylinder piston engine where two banks of eight cylinders are arranged in a V configuration around a common crankshaft. V16 engines are less common than engines with fewer cylinders, such as V8 and V12 engines.
In September 1914, Cadillac introduced the first V8 engine in a mass-produced automobile. The engine was a 5.1-liter, 70-horsepower engine that was known for its smoothness and performance. Within the first year, Cadillac sold over 13,000 cars with V8 engines.
The fastest V8 car in the world is the Ariel Atom 500 V8. Even though it has the least amount of power compared to every other car on this list, it does 0-62 mph in less than 2.3 seconds and has a top speed of 170 mph. The Atom 500 V8 was limited to just 25 units.
347ci, 2077 HP, 462 MPH: the World's Fastest Piston Engine in a Car is a small-block Chevy. accounting for the displacement differences: 2.80 inches for the 300 (actually, a 299); 3.25 inches for the slightly torquier 347.
A V14 engine is a V engine with 14 cylinders mounted on the crankcase in two banks of seven cylinders. It is a very rare layout, used almost exclusively on large medium-speed diesel engines used for power generation and marine propulsion.
There haven't been many V12 SUVs. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan, which uses the same mega-smooth 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 as every other Rolls, is the only one on this list. A controversial car to say the least, but very well executed. Click here to read our review of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
The Hennessey 'H800' Ford Mustang GT, is an adrenaline-fueled experience that showcases the power and performance of the upgraded vehicle. With 800 horsepower and 677 lb-ft torque under its belt, the 'H800' Ford Mustang GT upgrade is one of the fastest and most powerful muscle cars on the market.
You can make 1,000 hp pretty quick, but compression matters a lot. If it's a street engine that won't always be driven on better fuel, we'd go bigger on cubic inch.
