For string play, most yo-yos are what's called wing shape. This shape is wide, giving you a large catch zone to land the yo-yo on the string. This makes even simple tricks like Elevator that much easier to execute.
So in yo-yoing today, you basically got two different shapes and three different types of yo-yo's. The two shapes, which we've touched on before, is imperial® shaped, where it's kind of rounded. And then there's butterfly shape, where if you put two butterflies together, these are obviously two different yo-yo's.

These are 1A, 2A/Looping, 3A, 4A/Offstring and 5A/Freehand.

2A – Fast paced and high risk of error, this style is considered by some as the hardest style to master. Using two modified shape responsive yoyos performing looping tricks. 3A - A two-handed style, this style is performed with two long spinning, butterfly shape, unresponsive yo-yos. This yoyo style is also fast paced.

The Diabolo yo-yo is made from two cone shapes joined at the point, whereas the Chinese yo-yo has two discs connected by a longer axle, but in both cases, the performer gets the yo-yo spinning by raising and lowering a stick in each hand to roll the yo-yo on the string between the two.
The book refers to Chinese yo-yos as "kong zhong" (simplified Chinese: 空钟; traditional Chinese: 空鐘; pinyin: kōng zhong; lit. 'air bell'). Chinese yo-yos have a longer axle with discs on either end, while the diabolo has a very short axle and larger, round cups on either end.
