A small 323-hectare granite island off the coast of Tasmania is home to what's been described as "giant" tiger snakes, which have evolved in isolation from their mainland counterparts.
South Australia
Sand dunes are common breeding grounds for snakes of this region. Most of the venomous tend to be in this area. This is because it receives large amounts of sun but at the same time allows for enough cover for protection.
Just off the coast of Brazil lies the tiny island of Gueimada Grande, or “Snake Island” as it is more commonly known. Despite beautiful luscious forest and rocky terrain, this is not an island you would wish to stumble upon! Over it's 106 acres it is home to aproximately 430,000 deadly vipers.
Snake Island is a sand island, located in Corner Inlet in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. It has an area of 35-square-kilometre (14 sq mi) and is the largest island in Corner Inlet.
Carnac has a significant population of tiger snakes, one of the world's most deadly snake species. It is one of only two islands in Western Australia where tiger snakes are found. Bird watchers will love the variety of seabirds here.

They have evolved to become five times more venomous than their mainland brothers, so at least for our sake, they remain isolated.
Be aware there are venomous snakes on Wadjemup / Rottnest Island. The dugite is a timid creature, but may bite if harassed. If bitten, seek immediate medical assistance.
Ecological Characteristics. Snake Island is located in the northwest part of the Bohai Sea. It covers an area of 73 hectares and is host to about 20 000 venomous pit vipers, Gloydius shedaoensis, a species endemic to the island.
King Island has a relatively low diversity of reptiles compared to the Australian mainland. It is home to only nine reptile species, comprising three species of snakes and six of lizards.
Even weirder - most of the snakes on the island are blind because seagulls have pecked out their eyes when they feed on chicks. The island is 10 kilometres off Fremantle, and is home to other wildlife including sea lions.
Even more impressive, Australia is home to 20 of the 25 most venomous snakes in the world, including all of the top 11. The world's most venomous snake, the inland taipan is found nowhere else on Earth.
Which Country Has the Most Snakes? Brazil has more snake species than any other country in the world. There are over 375 species living in this country, some harmless and some dangerous. Brazil is home to 60% of the South American rainforest, which is a fertile breeding ground for these reptiles.
Most snake envenomings and fatalities occur in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa, with India reporting the most snakebite deaths of any country.
Norfolk Island is a very safe place to visit. There are no snakes on the island, and most of our spiders are harmless (even the big ones).

However according to statistics released by the National Coronial Information Service, eastern browns are responsible for the majority of snake bite deaths. The pygmy copperhead (Austrelaps labialis) is an Australian venomous elapid snake species found on Kangaroo Island and the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia. It is from the Austrelaps genus along with two other species of copperhead, the Highland and Lowland copperhead snakes.
Around 75% of Flinders Island is covered by native shrubland or scrub and in contrast to many other islands off the Eyre Peninsula no snakes exist on the Island, although twelve skink species and three gecko species are present.
The Tiger Snake is distributed across the south-eastern coast of Australia, including southern Queensland, eastern and southern New South Wales, Victoria and south-eastern Australia. In Victoria, Tiger Snakes can be found across a large area of the state.
Ms Carney also said that snakes were even more common in the suburbs. “You'd be surprised how many pythons end up in someone's drawer in Bondi,” she said. According to the Australian Museum website: “The Red Bellied Black Snake is widespread around the coast and ranges of eastern Australia.
In Australia, snakes sometimes slither into suburban backyards and homes. When the weather gets warm, they lounge in the sun. When it gets hot, they seek cool places: a wall crevice, under a refrigerator, under a barbecue grill, behind an air-conditioning unit.
Olive sea snake
This relatively large species has an olive-grey body in eastern Australia, but is bright orange to salmon pink in the west. It is one of the sea snakes most commonly seen by tourists. It is seemingly curious and social, often swimming towards and interacting with snorkellers.
"Eastern brown snakes — even a large one like this — have the ability to flatten themselves out and gradually squeeze under tiny gaps under doors. I frequently find them them inside Australian houses in summer."
